Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sandhyia Gosine. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Sandhyia, thanks for joining us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
My name is Sandhyia Gosine started my non profit because of my late parents. They came from a very humble beginnings. Despite not having much, they always made the best of what they had. my mother always believed in every dark cloud has a silver lining and made sure she lived her life by that motto. she and my dad would help others who came from Trinidad. They would often give things like dishes, clothing furniture and even helped them find employment within the families she would work for as a babysitter. My dad worked as a truck driver and often found jobs for the men who migrated. When my mother transitioned in 2022 I sat and listened to everyone speak about how she made them feel and each of them spoke through the tears of how much she helped them and how that made them feel. I realized in that moment that my mother was one of, if not the most successful person I knew and it was all because of the way she lived her life. i began to ask myself how do I want to be remembered. I started GoSinergy our non profit organization to expand on the reach of helping those around us, improving the chances of everyone around us attaining success so that the world that surrounds us would be successful. We all can determine the way we would be remembered when we go by the decision and choices we make when we are alive, the way we choose to live, ultimately would determine the way we will be remembered.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Absolutely, I was born in Trinidad and at the age of seven(7) I migrated to the United States with my parents and siblings. I live a life of spirituality and follow the ancient teachings of Sanatan Dharma. I believe that the universe has placed us here each with a purpose and I’m truly honored to be here while I find happiness in discovering mine. I am an author, community leader, and advocate deeply committed to empowering others, especially youth and survivors of trauma.
My two published books, ‘A Walk Through Life’ and ‘The Superhero Within Me’ – the latter illustrated by my daughter Isabella – reflect my passion for personal growth and finding the inner strengths we all possess. I am currently working on my third book which depicts the life, lessons and experiences based on my late mother’s life. With a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and as a certified NLP practitioner soon to be trauma-focused life coach, I’ve dedicated myself to supporting emotional healing and resilience.
I founded the non-profit organization Gosinergy Inc. with the mission of providing resources, training and empowerment programs for the community. This drive to leave a positive impact springs from the values instilled by my late parents. My work in this area, as well as being a voice for survivors of childhood sexual abuse like myself, has earned recognition such as the 2020 Women of Distinction honor from the NY State Assembly and a 2023 Commendation award from Senator Kevin Thomas.
Additionally, my personal journey as a survivor of childhood sexual abuse has driven me to work with various organizations to raise awareness and offer support to survivors. My story was featured in Newsday’s Faces of Long Island, where I shared my experiences. I truly credit my resilience to the challenges I’ve encountered and in doing so I continue to embody a positive mindset philosophy. Using those lessons to guide youths and young adults as well as companies and teams in positive thinking and growth mindset. With a background in business management and operations, I leverage my expertise to coach organizations on successful processes and procedures, conversions, and team development and success.
I live my life with the question of how I would like to be remembered, being the compass of most of my decisions.
I serve as a mentor with WENYC which is an initiative that is dedicated to helping women start and grow their businesses.
offering Free services to women entrepreneurs across the five boroughs and in multiple languages.
I’m grateful for this opportunity to share my story and life’s work with all of you today. Please feel free to connect with me. I am available for panels, keynote speaker or just to say hi – I’m an open book committed to this important mission of leaving the world better than I found it.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
My childhood was one that included lots of trauma and toxicity. Most of those situations was due to my parents not being there because they were trying their best to build a life for us. They worked multiple jobs trying to provide for my four siblings and myself. I was sexually abused by my one of father’s younger brother as well as my cousin who was his son, this happened on several different occasions. I was told that I would get in trouble if I told anyone and so I never did until about 15 years after. We moved to the US from Trinidad when I was seven (7) and we grew up in a culture that referred to everyone older than us as our aunts and uncles. My parents were friends with a local singer who’s family was considered to be celebrities back in Trinidad. We were never allowed to spend nights anywhere. However, this couple groomed not only me but my parents as well into allowing us to spend the night at their house. I was nine (9) years old and very timid and shy. That was the longest night and day of my life. That night they told me I would sleep with them and while I was still awake they were being intimate with each other. the next day I was very embarrassed and couldn’t wait to go home. However, the wife went to the supermarket and she took my brother and her son with her and while I was home alone with him. He sexually assaulted me. For years i blamed myself and felt shame. I felt anger and I felt tainted. I told my father out of anger one day and then i sat with my mother and told her. They cried with me and I told them that they were going to get what the universe and god had in store for them. As I became older the past haunted me and I was being confronted by thoughts I couldn’t process and emotions I couldn’t understand. I was in college when I tried to speak to a psychologist, However I wanted to become an FBI agent and did not want that on my record. I thought it would be a deterrent in being hired one day. So I looked for a therapist and I had no insurance and no one wanted to see me without paying out of pocket. I was undocumented so I didn’t have insurance and I didn’t have a job. So I started doing research on trauma and therapies and I applied it to myself. I am still in my healing journey but My mother had taught me to look for the sliver lining in every situation and I now have an 11 year old daughter and I am so grateful that this happened to me so that I am better equipped than my parents to make sure I never leave the opportunity for something like that to happen to my own daughter or anyone I know. Over the years I’ve built the resilience and managed to remain positive and insightful.
