We were lucky to catch up with Sandee Ewasiuk recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sandee , appreciate you joining us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
I wouldn’t say that I’m a mission driven company, as I work independently as a fine art painter, but certainly do have missions and my current mission involves bringing public awareness to endangered and threatened wildlife. I’ve been working on a series of paintings in hopes of raising that awareness.

Sandee , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I have been working professionally as an artist/painter for about 30 years. Im a graduate from the Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto Ontario, Canada where I majored in editorial illustration. I did some illustration work but found over time that I loved painting large scale so my illustrations grew into paintings. I credit my illustration education to the figurative, storytelling, imaginative aspect of my work. I tend to focus on the lighter and sometimes quirkier side of life in my paintings and in doing so hope to bring a smile to the viewer and perhaps a moment of feel good recognition. This makes me proud, but I’m also very proud that I’ve been able to give financially through my art. I’ve held a few fundraisers, the first following the devastating fires in Australia. My husband and I were at the tail end of a three month camping trip in Australia when the fires began, so on my return home I painted a series of three paintings which I made in to reproductions and sold, donating 100% of the commissions in support of the Australian wildlife. And more recently I held a similar fundraiser in support of the war in Ukraine.
I’ve also been an art educator for over 20 years and I’m happy and fulfilled with the knowledge I’m able to share with my students.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Thats a very good question as there are many ups and downs but the ups are really wonderful. Firstly, because I work independently for the most part, my time is my own. I paint a lot and though this requires great discipline, it also enables me to takes walks, visit with friends and family and reset during the down times. But I think the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is that nothing is ever static. There are always new challenges, new venues, new people to meet and new ideas to think about for a painting. My imagination never stops.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
You have to put yourself out there, in the world, constantly. You have to apply for shows, definitely work with social media, and just keep networking. Unless you’re work gets seen by the public it’s not going anywhere. Marketing is really half the battle.
