We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sana S.. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sana below.
Hi Sana, thanks for joining us today. What’s been the best thing you’ve ever seen (or done yourself) to show a customer that you appreciate them?
Since we are primarily an online store and don’t have our own physical location, any interaction with our customers is important to me. I am one happy girl when we sell at local farmer’s markets and I get to speak directly with them!
For our online orders, which make up most of our sales, I try my best to send out a handwritten note to as many customers as I can and will continue to do so as long as it’s possible. I know that they appreciate this because so many of them respond via email or social media. I absolutely love it when they reach out with feedback, suggestions or just to say hello. Also, I personally manage our social media channels which allows me to engage directly with our customers.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
The concept of 1Eatz started brewing in my head soon after my husband and I were blessed with twins. With two newborn babies, our life turned upside down in terms of time management. With always so much to do and never enough time, I had to drop my love of home cooking and we were basically surviving on take-out and frozen meals.
Breakfast was the easiest meal to skip since mornings were the busiest, until I started making these “mini meal kits” with veggies and herbs and setting them aside for quick cooking in the mornings. With that, we were able to prepare and cook fresh breakfast everyday within minutes. These “mini meal kits” were the beginning of 1Eatz. I then left my corporate career of 14 years to research and refine this idea and the kits later came to be known as “Egg Kits”.
With 1Eatz, our aim is to cut down on meal-prep work so that healthy, home-cooked meals can be enjoyed without spending hours in the kitchen. We offer single-serve meal kits called “Egg Kits” that contain a mix of all-natural veggies, herbs and seasoning without any preservatives or artificial ingredients. The Egg Kits are to be simply combined with eggs and can be cooked quickly in a variety of ways, without the need for cutting, chopping or prepping the ingredients.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Coming from a corporate environment, I was in the habit of working in a very structured environment where every responsibility, every task had its own time and place. Small businesses run at a very different pace from the corporate world. There is never any waiting around, decisions are to be made quickly, things must get done right away and change is imminent. Where all of that is exciting, it becomes difficult at times to manage so much with limited resources.
When I first started 1Eatz, I had to let go of the “structure” and learn to work in an ever-changing, and at times chaotic, environment. This is what they truly call “wearing all hats”. Although challenging, I have loved every minute of it and achieving success in my business has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I have tried a few different social media strategies over the years. My initial approach was to create a brand with a very polished image and a “corporate feel” in order to gain credibility and customer approval. I quickly learned that this is not always the best strategy when it comes to direct-to-consumer sales. It is especially true for small e-commerce brands, where the customer cannot walk into your store and get to know you in person. Most customers want to know who is selling, why they are selling and why your product is worth caring for, particularly in the case of new brands most people haven’t heard of.
My biggest social media advice is to show your face, engage directly with your customers and, as cliché as it may sound, be yourself. There is only one you. Tell your story, show your product, tell them why you care and why they should too.
