Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Samyria Spriggs . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Samyria, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
My mother supported my career when I started doing pageants which lead to me modeling. My mom went out and above to make sure that I achieved my goals. Sometimes she will drive almost two days to make sure that I make to my events. My mom sometimes don’t sleep for days because she wants to make sure that my career is going to make it. Most parents live their dreams through their kids but my mom will ask me if I want to continue down this career or to just stop altogether. My mom will always be my biggest supporter and I will always be truly grateful for her for going on this journey for me.
Samyria, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Samyria Spriggs and I’m a 12 year old model that resides in Houston, Texas. I was a beauty pageant queen which somehow I started modeling. I have walked in NYFW, LAFW, Atlanta, Orlando, Dallas, Baton Rouge, and of course Houston. My product is myself since as a model you have to make sure you model anything that the designer gives you to wear. I have been the youngest or sometimes the only kid model in a majority of shows which didn’t bother me at all since I’m so use to it. The reason I started this journey was because we need representation for kids of color in the Houston. I know that there is talent but we have to work harder than others because there is this stereotype that we are harder to work with because of our age but in majority of the shows I have been in the kids took over the show. I feel that if giving a chance we can showcase our skills and talents.
: Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
A goal driving my journey is to inspire kids globally that they can be whatever they want to no matter the age. I want to tell people younger than me who would want to be in the modeling industry themselves that they can do it, whenever they are ready. I don’t want them to feel like they have to wait just because they aren’t meeting age requirements to certain shows. I want them to know that when you want to do something that makes you happy, you shouldn’t have to wait for it.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
A story I can tell is when I was doubted on because of my age, height, and personality. People thought since I was a child, I wouldn’t stay still or cooperate with the other adults. It hurt for a while knowing that I was getting assumed just from how I was, young and excited to finally pursue the dream I had for my life. I learned to just stay quiet and then use the element of surprise to show people I can act really mature for my age.
