Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Samuel Oluwafemi. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Samuel, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So, let’s imagine that you were advising someone who wanted to start something similar to you and they asked you what you would do differently in the startup-process knowing what you know now. How would you respond?
Hi thank you, I believe it pretty simple for me if I wear to start over, i think one of the things I would is pick a niche, and invest in educational content from the people I look up to in that area.. because now I realize trying to do everything, been jack of all trade is a master of none.
I got interested in so many aspects and area of videography and I would still say till now I’m trying to find my foot as per the area I want to get to be know for
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Thanks. My name is Samuel Oluwafemi also know as Sabo if SABO MEDIA. Born and Raised in Lagos Nigeria.
I got into the film industry right after high school, I remember moving to South Africa to live with my uncle who then works at a tv station that where I learned and pick an interest in videographer and photography.
I started my freelance business in 2018 when I moved here from Nigeria, I remember the first few years right up to Covid, all I did was learn, shadow and trying to find my feet in the industry and in a new country
I believe one of the core principles and discipline I try to follow is been consistent and proactive, but I can’t say it been easy but that the something you have to work on everyday every week if you going to be successful in this business.
I provide videographers and photographers for business, brand and couples. I have shoot almost if not more than 500 weddings , shoot brands video for boutique, Watch commercials, DP for a water bottle brand and create some dope creative photography imagines.
I believe one of the things that set me apart is my hunger to learn more, on and off the job, and alway love to shoot clean and dope visual/ photo for me it not just about getting paid only it about have I help my clients business with this photo/ video and help them solve the problems
I have had many proud moment over the years, getting to works with some big clients on dope project as DP. From working with Roc Nation, shooting their R&B label upcoming artist to working with Ari Fletcher for her cosmetic line Remedy to some I can’t touch on
The main thing I say I want potential would be getting to work with high tier clients, working on bigger projects, models and fashion designers. I would say it would be a dream to shoot a runway show/ events or red Carpet. I believe I still have a long way to go, more to learn and explore and I can’t wait to see my potential and where I would be in the future.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Yess!! I would say FREEDOM. You ask me why? Well I want to be financially free, creatively free, I want to get to travel the world working freely. I think been free and not having to be tie down to clocking in and out of a warehouse work is freedom I know cause I have done work at a warehouse before. So I want my creativity to give me the freedom to explore and experience life while doing what I love most.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
Haha I think this the one I will keep saying if someone ask me how did I really get started here in the US.
For a young lad who just moved in across the globe to a new environment, state and country with no family, no parents or siblings it could be tough and difficult to find your ground.
For me I started working at a warehouse where I met a friend that I later moved in with and that where I met my good friend now, who’s a barber, I believe I saw on is IG page of a video he posts it like a commercial video for us salon and i really love the video and went to the caption to find out who shot it, and that how I clicked on his page, firstly thing I Emailed him not dm but emailed him saying. “Hey I really love your work my name is Samuel and I would love ti shadow you and learn from you” and to my surprise I got a reply back. And mind you I have send bunch of Dms/ email to other creatives but I say he’s the only one that replied back.
That how o connected with Daka David (IG: dakadavid_) and we have been working together since 2018 we have done and work on some dope project, travel around and he’s also one of the founder of the wedding business I shoot for( ALoveExperiences) which was found around that time in 2018/19 I believe
