Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Samuel Moreno. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Samuel, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The most meaningful project of my life, by far, is starting Thrift Club at CSULB. As a commuter school, Cal State Long Beach truly did lack a creative outlet and community for students and people alike. Therefore, during my freshman year I made it my goal to bring my cousins club from LMU (Thrift Club) to CSULB.
I had huge aspirations for this club, however, the focal point always revolved around creating a community. A community for those interested in fashion, budgeting, style, and all around creative people. This club is in every way my baby, as I have put non-stop time, care, attention, and dedication into this organization.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Samuel Moreno, I am the President and Founder of Thrift Club at CSULB. Surprisingly, my major has absolutely nothing to do with thrifting or fashion, as I am a kinesiology major looking into medical school. However, thrifting and fashion has always been an awesome creative outlet for me. Which is one of the reasons why I decided to bring my cousin’s club to CSULB.
Thrift Club revolves entirely around fashion, styling, thrifting (obviously), budgeting, and so much more. One of our main goals is teaching people about alternatives in the marketplace. Currently, fast fashion is absolutely decimating the market place and the earth. Fast fashion is currently the second largest contributor in carbon emission behind oil. Therefore, we have made it a huge goal to teach our community about the alternatives.
Another big goal is making sure our members know the best deal out there, where to shop, how to ensure they are buying the best things possible. It is crucial that as college students we make well informed decisions on where our money goes since most of us are pretty broke….
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I truly believe society needs to expand their mind. There are so many great alternatives in every facet of life — yet most of the time we stick to only one path when there is so many beautiful and unique resources at our disposal. If we would only look.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding part of this organization has been feedback from out members. When people are thanking me for creating this club because they finally found a pace that feels like a community for them, it is truly one of the most fulfilling things ever. To give someone a place and outlet to express themselves while also exploring a whole new community it’s very special.
