We were lucky to catch up with Sammy Ruiz recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sammy, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
My parents had a huge part in what I do as a creative. Since I was young, they would always support anything I wanted to do. They fanned the flame so to speak whether it be my interest in skateboarding, music or art.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Sammy Ruiz. I am a Mexican / American Los Angeles native who loves all things spooky. Art and Music took off at the same time for me. My band started in High school and I hand drew our flyers and shirt designs. My band Badluck Bandits is a rock n roll band and a lot of our shirt designs had spooky elements. When I wasn’t performing live with my band, I was doing art shows around Los Angeles. A lot of the art shows and conventions I was doing were Horror themed.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
As a creative, we will get tested by lack of motivation, mean people criticizing us and procrastination but nothing tested me like the loss of my mom in July 2020. Not only did I not want to draw and play music anymore, I didn’t want to live. With the help of my family and amazing partner, I was able to start drawing and playing music shortly after everything happened. The weird part is, that in addition to finding my mental strength again, I was blessed with so many opportunities like I have never received before. I believe that my mom is pulling strings for me up in paradise. I owe everything I do to my mom, dad, partner, daughter, family and god. Lastly, if you’re experiencing hard times, keep pushing and surround yourself around people who love and care for you and most importantly, keep the faith.

Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
I use many resources to assist with my creativity. I am always on youtube looking up “how to” videos and I also reach out to people who have accomplished what I am aiming for, for their advice. It’s so important to be resourceful and network.
