We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sammie Terbrack. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sammie below.
Sammie, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
My passion for health and fitness ignited in high school, leading me to earn a bachelor’s degree in exercise science from Oakland University, MI. Right after college, I became a personal trainer, and my journey naturally expanded into nutrition, transforming me into a dedicated nutritionist. I thrived in this industry, working with individuals eager to lose weight and embrace healthier lifestyles. Watching my clients surprise themselves and fall in love with their healthier, happier selves was incredibly fulfilling.
I met my husband at the gym—our shared passion for fitness brought us together. We even had our wedding reception at the gym (our original venue was rained out, so it was a spontaneous backup plan). But everything changed when I got pregnant.
Becoming a mom was a dream I held long before my career aspirations. It’s the most important role I’ll ever have. However, during my pregnancy, I was shocked by the lack of education and support on how to properly nourish and strengthen my body in preparation for birth. The postpartum care was even more minimal. I felt lost and disconnected from my body. The only advice I received was, “This is how most moms feel, it’s normal.”
I had no idea how to heal my body or take care of myself while caring for a newborn. My world turned upside down, and I realized this was a significant problem that needed solving—not just for me, but for countless other moms feeling the same way.
Driven by this realization, I delved into prenatal and postpartum exercise, becoming a certified pre/postnatal specialist. I went back to school to become a functional nutritionist, focusing on women’s health issues like hormones and gut health. Today, alongside another Functional Practitioner, I help women struggling with fertility or postpartum concerns. We work to balance their hormones, restore their energy, heal from pregnancy and birth, and ultimately help them thrive in their lives.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Most who know me, know me as Coach Sammie. I’ve been a trainer for over 14 years. I’ve worked in almost every setting there is: clinics, hospital, gyms, fields, etc.
I started out as a Certified Personal Trainer and then became a Certified Nutritionist shortly after because I realized what happened outside the gym was just as impactful as what happened inside of it.
As I entered motherhood and realized the huge gap in education & support for pregnant and postpartum women – I studied and became a Certified Prenatal & Postpartum Specialist.
Recently, I went back to school for Functional Nutrition and am currently a Level 3 Practitioner through Restorative Wellness Solutions.
I work with them all over the US who want to feel better in their bodies. I special in working with women who are struggling with infertility and those who want to heal after having a baby. I help moms go from barely surviving in motherhood to THRIVING in motherhood.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
From 2010-2020 I worked in person. I loved this but always felt I was limited on who I could serve because they had to be local.
In 2021 I made the decision to go on-line and coach virtually. This allows me to help support women no matter where they live. While most of my clients live in my home state of MI, I also have clients in Arizona, Kansas, Minnesota, and even Canada!
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
I think a combination of in-person networking and on-line marketing have both helped grow my business.
What you can do on-line is pretty amazing these days. I find education is easy & helpful to do online. In-person networking allows for some really great connection and trust to be built from there.
