We were lucky to catch up with Sammi Wong recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sammi, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I knew I wanted to pursue a creative path through the process of elimination. I took on different hobbies and rotated through them as quickly as I started, I was always open to trying and experimenting with something new. It was through trying different classes at my community college, switching to different majors, and artistic mediums that brought me to the realization photography was all I could think about. It became apparent quickly I was able to dedicate myself whole-heartedly.

Sammi, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I got into creative work and disciplines trying different mediums and felt in touch with photography, sculpture, and ceramics. I continually built my knowledge in institutional and life-experience settings. Learning to find the right mentors in my mediums of interest to guide and provide feedback was invaluable. What sets me apart is my ability to work thoughtfully on each project concept, and bring new perspectives and applications from a multi-disciplinary background.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I’m currently still working through this lesson, but it’s to unlearn holding onto a project too long or dearly, sometimes getting it done is far more important that “perfecting” it. Fixating on a desired outcome when it doesn’t meet your expectations feels like you’re setting yourself up for failure, learning how to pivot is necessary.

Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
Just write. Write about anything and everything as often as you can, you’ll get to reflect and learn more about yourself.
