Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Samilia Colar. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Samilia thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
When I was around 7 years old I remember my parents asking me what I wanted to be when I grew up and I told them I wanted to be an artist. I spent much of my time sketching and drawing, and would dream about traveling and creating art in different places. As I got older and discovered more forms of art my passions led me to fabric and later fashion.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a Nigerian handbag and custom apparel designer. The African prints my mom wore while I was growing up always fascinated me with their vibrant colors and unique designs. Once I learned how to sew in college I started using African prints to create wearable fashion. I began with handbags and eventually added in apparel because I wasn’t seeing things I had in my mind anywhere else. I now create most of my handbags out of leather because I like the durability and feel. In addition to creating handbags and apparel, I host sewing workshops for youth ages 7-14 and adults as well as private sewing lessons throughout the year. I’m most proud of the impact I have on the community and getting to meet my client on a regular basis through my workshops. It’s a fun time to connect, laugh and build a relationship. I have made new friends and have met so many great people over the years because of it.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
The goal of my creative journey is to continually inspire others to create, and explore creativity. There are so many available paths within the fashion industry, and sewing is just one minute component that can lead to much more, it can blend into other creative pursuits too. The mission driving my creative journey is to inspire others to create in hopes that their work will inspire even more. I aspire to host my sewing workshops around the world because they are truly a unique time where individuals are having creative breakthroughs, getting reacquainted with their inner designer/artist, and forming new lifelong friendships. That’s something I want everyone to experience.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Sharing your creativity with others. One of the things that drive me is seeing that spark in the eyes of the youth that come through my studio doors – watching their passion grow before my eyes and hearing their vision and excitement for fashion. Everyone has a unique point of view. When the youth are able to grasp that at their younger age, that’s magic. And I’m so grateful to be a pivotal part of their journey.
