We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Samil Molina a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Samil, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?

I was learning to make beats way back around 2005-2006 on pirated versions of Fruity Loops. But it wasn’t until I was in grad school in the middle of pursuing a masters degree around 2015-2016 that I really decided to go in head first and go all in. At the time I thought I was going to really pursue a career in academia but my heart just wasn’t in it and I was going through a lot in those days. I dropped out of grad school and never looked back.

Samil, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

I released my first instrumental album in 2018 with a limited edition cassette released by Insert Tapes Records. In 2019 I founded Loop Fiction LLC, since then we’ve had over a dozen releases under the imprint. Earlier this year I dropped Fortune Cookies for Breakfast, a collaborative album with M.I.C Book. I was happy with the reception it received, being feature on Okayplayer.com was definitely a highlight. I also dropped an instrumental album, A Summer Night that was well received.

Most recently I singed a deal with Below System Records and I’m in the middle of finishing up a few projects I have for them. We just dropped the first single of my collaborative EP with LoudChief back in September. That’s coming early 2023.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?

Just being able to create and having the ability to create something new everyday. When I get messages from people all over the world about how a particular song connected with them that really puts it into perspective for me.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?

My mission is just to have fun doing this and be me. I’m grateful that my music is able to reach and connect with so many people all over the world. I’ll never take any of what has come from this journey for granted.
