We were lucky to catch up with Samiara Mitchell recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Samiara, thanks for joining us today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
When I was laid off I took a risk by not going and finding another job. I seen the end to that job coming so when it happened I thought, that was my chance and a sign to go after my dream. So I used everything I had left to buy a camera and some merchandise for my brand. I spent everyday until the end of that year selling tshirts and hoodies to make a living. Even though some days were slow and I didn’t sell anything, that learning experience was exactly the spark I needed to not be afraid to go chase my dream and make it my reality.
Samiara, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am Samiara Mitchell aka Quing Sam, I own a clothing brand named “Indego”. This is a brand the celebrates and promotes people to be themselves and to bring out the best in themselves. I started this brand in 2019 under the name “Endigo Crew”, bringing everyone together as one. I’ve changed it to just “Indego” because not only do we need to heal collectively but we need to not forget that self-love is the best love.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
I started reading books like “the teachings of Ptahhotep”, Queen Afua’s, “Sacred Woman”, and Robert Greene’s “48 Laws of Power” prior to me starting my brand late 2019. These books helped me shape my thinking as a business woman and Black Woman in todays time. I also followed the teachings of Dick Gregory, Marcus Garvey, Angela Davis and Master P to name a few . Those individuals showed me the importance of ownership, knowledge of self and understanding capitalism.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I had to fully unlearn that people are supposed to support my brand, even though there’s a great message and great reasoning behind it. That was the root to my many disappointments. I had to learn that nobody is obligated to support my brand. This way I could focus on selling the brand to each new face I would meet. I looked at it as an opportunity to create business pitches on the spot to get sales. That was a tough pill to swallow but it made me strengthen my marketing skills in the process.
