We recently connected with Sa’Mia Walker and have shared our conversation below.
Sa’Mia, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today The first dollar your business earns is always special and we’d love to hear how your brand made its first dollar of revenue.
My first “real” client was at a pop up shop way back in February 2021, just a little over a month in business. All of my customers prior were friends and family member, and they are still my biggest supporters. This was my first pop up shop, and my first customer brought two nutty caramel brownies. She took her first bite right then and there she fell in love. She came back over and brought two more since it was a “cheat day” for her. Ever since then brownies have been my top seller, and my favorite to make. I will never forget that experience. I want to thank every customer that I have had, and the future ones as well.
Sa’Mia, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am Sa’Mia Walker (Mia) the owner of Whipped by Mia LLC. I am a 17 year old entrepreneur who has always had a passion for cooking. I got my first job at 14 at a grocery store, and I knew then, I wanted to make money while doing what I love. So, when I turned 15 I registered my business and began baking. I worked sleepless nights (and mornings) to get orders done. I am a perfectionist, so there were times when things did not go right and I had to learn the virtue of patience. I started out baking, then branched out to cooking as well. I sell a plethora of items, from Oreo brownies to lobster tails and pasta. What sets me apart from others is that I work hard. I manage school, a business, a job, and a social life at the same time. I am only 17. I make sure any food I sell is up to par so my customers are always happy. I am THEE definition of teentrepreneur.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Building a social media presence can be relatively difficult with all the different algorithms. I had to study my audience and activity across all platforms. I studied the times my followers were most active, and what they liked to see on their feed. When I collected all of my data I used it to my benefit. I started creating post using design apps to look more professional. I only posted at times that I knew my followers were active. I used certain hashtags that people in my surrounding areas followed. My social media is still growing slowly but surely. My advice to anyone trying to grow their social media audience is to just KNOW your audience. This will help anyone trying to achieve success in any area, not just social media.
Any advice for managing a team?
My advice to anyone trying to manage a team is first, kindness. Kindness goes so far with everything. Managing a team can be difficult, but if you posses leadership skills, and motivation, your team can succeed. There is so much that goes into managing a team, and making sure that everyone is on the same page will benefit everyone in the long run. Although I might be young, I have always been a leader. The key to maintaining high moral is understanding. If someone on the team is misunderstood, it leads to teammates checking out because they do not feel heard or seen. A team that works together will always go far.
