We were lucky to catch up with Sami Womack recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sami, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Alright, let’s jump into one of the most exciting parts of starting a new firm – how did you get your first client who was not a friend or family?
In 2020, after about 4 years of my business only breaking even from the sale of digital products, I decided to start offering 1:1 budget coaching services. I signed 5 clients with my first launch, and I was hooked!
My first few clients were all ideal clients — for me, that meant Millennial women wanting to learn how to break the paycheck-to-paycheck cycle, pay off debt, and build an emergency fund. Finding my ideal clients came from the previous 4 years I had spent building my brand through Instagram, my podcast, and my email list.
After this launch, I felt like all of my years of hard work were finally paying off. I got to finally give myself a paycheck and expand my team as well.

Sami, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a nationally recognized money expert, budget coach, CFP® student, and the brains behind A Sunny Side Up Life.
When I’m not downing caramel coffee or homeschooling my three daughters, I’m helping Millennial women from all over the world reverse burnout, find financial contentment, and enjoy a slow intentional life.
My husband of 15 years, Daniel, and I began our debt-free journey with $490,000 of debt. We took control of our family’s finances by downsizing our home dramatically, budgeting, and changing our daily habits.
Today, we are consumer debt-free with a net worth of $400k+ and on track to retire at age 50.
My own personal finance journey inspired me to help other women who were where my family used to be. I started my business as an Instagram page and a blog, it grew to include a podcast and digital products, and is now serving 100+ clients and 15k Instagram followers.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
My podcast has been an amazing source of client referrals for me. For one, my clients get tons of free resources and information before they even start to work 1:1 with me. For two, they have a weekly opportunity to decide if they like and trust me. Once they sign up to become a paying client of mine, they already know my backstory, my family, and my sense of humor.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
My best advice would be to show up often and authentically. Clients (especially Millennials) want to know that you’re a real person, that you’re trustworthy, and that you understand their struggles.
Also — if you’re financially able to, hire a social media team. My team has been a priceless asset to me. There’s no possible way I could keep up with my personal life, my clients, AND my social media all by myself.
