We were lucky to catch up with Sami Hupp recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sami, thanks for joining us today. Can you share an anecdote or story from your schooling/training that you feel illustrates what the overall experience was like?
I was going to a community college full time and working part-time as a hairdresser and a nutrition aid at a hospital. I went to school for over 3 years and received my associate’s degree in hospitality management with a focus on nutrition and dietetics.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
My name is Sami, I am a Nutrition and Dietetic Technician, Registered or NDTR. I have been in this field for over 5 years now. I got into nutrition after experiencing my own lifestyle change in my early 20s. I decided to pursue a nutrition degree and work in the field of nutrition. in 2020 I created BetaCarrotTeen. It was named because my son really enjoyed carrots and betacarotene was already taken on Facebook. It started out as a blog, I would write to vent because I was suffering from postpartum depression. Over time, my blogs progressed into, nutrition blogs. One thing led to another, and I started branding BetaCarrotTeen as a wellness sight. I had people showing interest in coaching, so I started selling services. Currently, with BetaCarrotTeen, I have a bl0g, meal plans, ebooks, 1-on-1 coaching, and online programs. BetaCarrotTeen is my side hustle, but I put a lot of time and effort into it. I have a full-time job, I am a mother and a wife. With BetaCarrotTeen I want to empower women to become a healthier version of themselves.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I think my whole journey as a small business owner is proof of my resilience. I spend many hours working on content, on handouts and education for clients, working on online programs, networking, and some days I just feel like I’m wasting my time. I look at my followers on Instagram and think, well I don’t have very many followers, I don’t have many likes, So how am I going to get my business to grow? I have dry spells, where I don’t have any clients, and I wonder why I continue to do what I do. But I know what I do this. I do this because I love it, because I love researching and getting information on nutrition trends. And teaching women how to live healthier lives, as mothers, as busy women. I continue to do it because it’s something I enjoy, I may not be making too much money right now, but when I have clients, I know I am truly making an impact on their lives.
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
Nutrition is my second career path. I was a cosmetologist from the moment I graduated high school, and I worked in a couple of hair salons. I even worked in a salon while going back to school. I had dreams of being a top stylist, but that was shut down because I had a manager I worked for, that made doing hair unbearable. So I decided to pursue nutrition and go back to school.
