We were lucky to catch up with Samfire recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Samfire, thanks for joining us today. Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?

Yes and yes! I am still figuring things out as an artist, still working to make it sustainable. My emotions can get too wrapped up in the music and one small set back devour me for the night. But I cannot deny that music is what makes me happiest and so, every morning, I wake up and pursue it as determinedly as I had the day before.

I do think about the scary reality that it may not work out. The fulfilment music gives me is what makes that thought so scary. But mostly I try not to overthink. Today music makes me happy and I’ll keep pursuing it for that.

Samfire, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

I am an alt-pop, synth-obsessed singer and producer. My music is dreamily psychedelic and bleeds with vulnerable lyrics. Typically, I write about personal, every day experiences with a melodramatic flare. Production wise, I have been heavily influenced by a history of school orchestras and choirs. My songs are richly layered and textured, simultaneously intimate and immense.

Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?

BBC Introducing has been the most brilliant tool. I have been using the uploader for years, resulting in numerous radio plays. I also have been invited to play Latitude Festival which is the biggest opportunity of my career so far!

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?

Im having to pivot all the time creatively. An album becomes an EP, an EP becomes a series of singles. I’m still learning my craft and the industry that I’m in. While I am, it’s important to be flexible and listen to the advice of those around me. This doesn’t mean losing sight of my vision, but letting other ideas in!
