We recently connected with Samaria Witherspoon and have shared our conversation below.
Samaria, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
First thing first, I just want to say I have the best parents. My parents Sharon and Johnny Witherspoon are my two best friends. Since childhood, they provided me with structure, but also a platform to be expressive. Of course, they encouraged me to be active and make good grades, but they allowed me to choose the activities I wanted to partake in and cheered me on afterwards. Whether it was the student council, the Beta club, cheerleading, the drama club, the step team, the list goes on, they supported. They were there. Physically, mentally, financially and emotionally. They never had anything negative to say about when I had to be picked up, the cost or anything. They knew what was required of them and they did it. Unconditional support and love are the two things that they provided. It shaped me to be the person I am today. There were highs and lows like any other parent-child relationship, but overall, I knew with them behind me, I could do whatever I put my mind to. Having that mindset then manifested me to have the confidence and overall persona that I do today.
Samaria, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a therapist, but I am not your ordinary therapist. I am one who is authentic in her approach to meet my clients wherever they are in their lives. I provide individual, couples, and family counseling. The areas that I provide counseling in are trauma, anger management, depression, grief, self-esteem, managing relationships, anxiety, work performance and overall life satisfaction. The therapeutic relationship that my clients and I create is one that is authentic, instrumental, informative and confidential. I do not take the relationship lightly. They know that we are a team tackling on this thing called life together.
If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
I would NEVER choose another profession. I love the field of mental health. I love bringing awareness to it. Mental health is so real. It’s so instrumental to understand the depth of mental health when trying to maneuver through life. I wish more people understood the importance. That’s actually my goal to continuously bring light to mental health and educate others. I can’t think of any other profession that I would enjoy as much. I love seeing others grow past their traumas and issues. I enjoy the happiness and growth.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
My most effective strategy is just showing up as me. Flaws and all. I want my clients to know that I am a real person, and I am not so farfetched from reality. I have relationship and friend problems and I even find myself in dark spaces sometimes, but I have learned how to maneuver through those times in the healthiest ways. My training, education and experience is what I rely on. My tribe navigates towards me. The people that see me for me and are willing to trust me on their journey and I am grateful for that.
