We were lucky to catch up with Samara Ramos-Brown recently and have shared our conversation below.
Samara, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. The more we talk about good leadership the more we think good leadership practices will spread and so we’d love for you to tell us a story about the best boss you’ve had and what they were like or what they did that was so great?
The best boss I ever had was during my years in the corporate world. She was a great mentor. She shared knowledge and built everyone in her team up. She provided guidance without micro-managing. She fought for her team and I felt supported and trusted.
Samara, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a wife and mother. I am an immigrant from Brazil. Being able to have my own business (in partnership with my husband) feels surreal sometimes. It is wonderful to live in a country where these dreams can come true.
We decided to open a yoga studio after my husband took his first few classes at a different Yoga Six studio. Once he realized it was a franchise, he reached out to corporate and we set up the first meeting.
I think it is important to highlight that, even though we have the support from our Y6 corporate family, our studios are 100% run locally by everyday people. We go through great lengths to add all the details to provide an amazing experience for existing members as well as yogis looking for a studio home.
This is precisely what sets us apart: the details! The warm welcome at the front desk, the cool eucalyptus towels after class , the inclusive teachers, the music, the lights!
We operate heavily on members’ feedback and focus on their needs. And we love to have fun together!
It is important to us that you enjoy your experience and look forward to coming back to classes.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Authenticity! I think it is really important to show up as you are. I also think it is important to own mistakes and with grace, pivot and do better.
Being authentic will radiate your light and foster connection with people. A yoga studio is a place where people come to for so many different reasons. They should feel welcome and loved.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
Yes! Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki and Sharon L. Lechter. This book was such a wake up call for us and really changed our mindset. I wish I had read it 20 years sooner!
