We were lucky to catch up with Samantha W recently and have shared our conversation below.
Samantha , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
Josh and I started doing photography together during the year of the pandemic. Like everyone else, we needed a new hobby, something to fill up some free-time, and something that would allow us to get out and still interact with others. Photography allowed us to do so. It still does. As a husband and wife team, we’ve learned a lot about one another through this journey. How to work as a team. What to do and what not to do, and how to be better communicators. It has been so amazing to be able to create this magical experience for our clients, to make them feel comfortable and push them out of their comfort zone, and then to create beautiful images for them, their reactions are priceless to us.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Photography is a perspective. Like many, everyone’s perspective will vary from person to person. Many people think you can just take a picture with a click of a button and that’s it, but there’s so much more than that. There’s so much to think about like symmetry, lighting, angles, colors, and that’s just the beginning of it. Additionally, our iPhones are so amazing at adjusting the lighting that I think one could argue that the appreciation for photography has decreased. Something that we really try to do is take the time to edit the details, versus just slapping on a filter with each photo. We like to show each photo some love. It can also be challenging to be a photographer in a city that is oversaturated with photographers, but something that I think sets us apart from others too is that we really want to connect with our clients. We want to make them feel comfortable. It’s not easy being in front of a camera if you can’t see what’s being photographed from the other side. We try to provide a trusting relationship during the session and ask our clients any questions that can better help us improve their experience prior to their session. We are so thankful for those who have returned back to us to capture many more special moments in their lives. I’d like to think that means we are doing something right :)
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Building an audience on social media can take time. To build an audience you have to be interactive with them. You have to post constantly and you have to make sure that it’s content that they’d want to see or that they’re interested in. This can be difficult as photography is a perspective so you may not always capture 100% of the room like you want to. Because of our day-jobs, we have very limited time to post on social media. Photography has been something that we love to do for fun during our free time, and we continue to stick around for those who are willing to give us a shot solely on our work and not just on a random number of followers.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Absolutely. When we started photography, I think our goals were pretty big, maybe even too optimistic. We might have just had the pandemic-blues and didn’t want to work a normal day-job like everyone else, but instead we wanted to be able to make a living off of being creative. I think this goal of ours changed when we realized that we were feeling overwhelmed. There was a point where it just wasn’t fun anymore. And we didn’t want to compromise our love for photography because it’s something we truly love to do.
