We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Samantha Sirota a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Samantha thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s start with the decision of whether to donate a percentage of sales to an organization or cause – we’d love to hear the backstory of how you thought through this.
From the inception of our organization in 2010 we’ve been donating to local schools.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
We (Samantha & Mark Sirota) started the box in 2010, building on our love of organic fruit and spending the day at the farmers market. Our program offers a win-win situation where you get the best-tasting fruits and veggies and your dollars directly support sustainable agriculture and local schools and charities- so far over we’ve raised over $250,000 for our partnering schools! In addition to delivering produce and creating content-packed newsletters with oh-so-easy recipes, we also love to teach students of all ages about the importance of knowing where our food comes from and how we can vote with our food dollars for a healthier future.
Good Box Organics is here to do what we do best, delivering farm-fresh organic foods with smiling faces and changing our food system one box at a time!

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
2020 was a wild year for everyone and our business had to make a huge pivot to keep serving our community during lockdown. It’s always been our mission to help make our community healthier, one box at a time, and at no time did that feel more true than when our community was dependent on us for fresh foods during the pandemic.
Prior to the lockdown, a majority of our deliveries to families happened on campus at schools and we made an overnight pivot to home-deliveries as schools closed. This helped us keep our doors open and kept our community able to receive their produce each week AND it especially helped the farmers we work with! Nature didn’t stop producing ripe fruits and veggies and many of the farmers we work with had lost a ton of outlets overnight, with restaurants and farmers markets being closed. Having a means to distribute their fresh produce to families felt like a tremendous responsibility and privilege.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I think our enthusiasm and love for the produce we deliver is part of what makes our organization special. We are note a venture-capital funded business looking to build a big profit by whatever means necessary.
We’re a mom and pop (virtual) shop that delivers truly fresh foods from farmers with whom we’ve had relationships with for decades. In fact some of our customers have even been getting the box for 10-15 years now! Our desire to always do good and deliver the best has kept our family business running since 2010.
