We were lucky to catch up with Samantha Silverman recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Samantha, thanks for joining us today. What’s the kindest thing anyone has ever done for you?
Being in the art field, there is a lot of competition when it comes to photography. For a while i was doing photoshoots with one of my clients, Doreen. Her style is western chic, horse riding and barrel racing. After many photoshoots, she was not only an established client but also a friend. In the mist of all the shoots, Doreen was planning her wedding! Although i am mainly a portrait and lifestyle photographer, I’ve always wanted to try wedding photography. Little did i know, Doreen had decided to asked me to be her wedding photographer and of course I said yes! Knowing a couple had faith in me to be there on their special day is the most amazing feeling and absolute kindest thing anyone has ever done for me. Their wedding was out-of-state at a beautiful secluded location for close family and friends. Wedding photography is the complete opposite of my normal photoshoots and events. Behind the scenes for every detail of the wedding and capturing each intimate memorable moment allowed me to see a whole different world of photography. Im grateful to have been thought about let alone chosen to be their wedding photographer. It many not seem much to other people but i have doubted myself for years and wondered if i will ever be a good enough photographer. Being a photographer for a wedding is now checked off of my goals list and allowed me to have that boost of confidence that i needed in order to fully believe in myself and my capabilities of being a photographer.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Samantha Silverman, I’m a Talented, Passionate Graphic Designer & Photographer that creates Timeless, Beautiful Photos & brings Designs to Life! I was born and raised in the Garden State, New Jersey. Artistry runs in my blood. My grandfather was a Vice President creative director for over 20 years as well as a freelance graphic designer and a watercolor artist. My father attended the Art Institute of Philadelphia and had become an Art Director for over 15 years and now custom builds Chevrolet Yenko Camaros for customers all around the world. I started photography around the age of 12 once I received my very first camera as a birthday present. From visiting local Zoos and Tourist Areas or traveling to surrounding states, soon after fell in love with the trade.
I was accepted into an art based program throughout high school and later received my Adobe Certified Associates certificate in PhotoShop, InDesign and Illustrator. Not only did I learn about the programs within graphic design, I also learned the techniques of traditional and digital photography including Film and Darkroom Photography, Studio Lighting, and Multimedia Photography. While in this art
based program, I also learned about conventional printing and Digital Reproduction. The techniques I learned that are a bit more involved included Design and Reproduction, Screen Printing, and Production
Graphics.
After graduating in 2016, I moved over 1,200 miles from home to continue my education at Nova Southeastern University here in South Florida. I was awarded to be an ambassador of the Razors Edge Shark Talent Scholars Program where I was able to brighten NSU with creativity and culture. From working as the Graphic Designer and Photographer throughout campus departments, joining the Sigma
Delta Tau – Delta Iota Chapter Sorority as well as forming lifelong relationships with not only my fellow peers but faculty and staff throughout college, my experience at NSU was amazing to say the least. In the blink of an eye, I graduated in 2020 receiving my B.A in Graphic Design as well as in Studio Art and Marketing.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Creativity is rewarding in itself. The whole creative process allows an artist to learn more about themself. Between being patient, learning the do’s and don’t’s of the process, and learning how to accept failure and imperfections. The process is what makes the art, not the finished product although many see it the other way around. Having full creativity over a project with little to no restrictions or requirements allows my creative mind to explore. Although some projects do require some restrictions and requirements, i am still able to achieve what the client is requesting. Any feedback from the client, other customers or viewers are the most rewarding whether good or bad. Although positive feedback is the best feeling in the world but there are times when there is harsh criticism in which i have to take into account. The negative comments about a design, layout or even editing skills allow me to grow and improve on my craft. In certain ways it’s rewarding because it makes me think and use other ways to design and put my work out into the world showing the many ways art can be done. Another rewarding aspect of my craft is the overall completion of a project and seeing it be put to use. Either a design or photos i created is used on a banner, flyers, business cards, or even just on social media or their website means i have done my job right.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
From the time i received my first camera at 12 years old, i knew i wanted to pursue art as my career. A few years later while still continuing photography in and outside of school, i decided i wanted to ver off the path of art and try out Marine Biology. Ive always loved sea animals and all that comes with it. Its ecosystem, the rehabilitation on sick animals, even how our oceans are effected by our day to day activities and how we can help to stop polluting our oceans. I started working at the local aquarium 3-4 times a week, learning about different animals and their needs as well as feeding them, cleaning their exhibits and even providing educational talks throughout my shifts to the visitors to help others understand the importance of our oceans and the environment surrounding them.
Junior year of high school, I applied to Nova Southeastern University as a Marine Bio Major and Graphic Design Minor. Once i started school in August of 2016, classes began and it just didn’t feel right. Knowing how much i loved art and what i can do in college to help me expand my expertise, i switched my major to Graphic Design and on top of that added Studio Art and Marketing. Although it was a tough transition, i knew it was the right choice. From all the different techniques i was taught, to experiences like curating an exhibition, becoming the main photographer and graphic designer for the performing & visual arts department and even showcasing my own photography and graphic design works in my very own senior exhibition was so rewarding. Through all the struggles of being 1200 miles away from home, changing majors my freshman year and jumping back into the art field at 100 miles per hour, i would do it all over again. Im able to say that i love what i do and honestly doesn’t even feel like im working, just enjoying what i was meant to do my entire life. If i had any advice to give, it would be to follow your heart. Do what will make you happy, be ready for any and all obstacles and NEVER give up.
