In our experience, overnight success is usually the result of years of hard work laying the foundation for success, but unfortunately, it’s exactly this part of the story that most of the media ignores. So, we’d appreciate if you could open up about your growth story and the nitty, gritty details that went into scaling up.
In 2019, Samantha Shelton took her first steps into the Wholesale Channel with a clear vision: to one day become a business owner. A year later, she formed an LLC, planting the seeds for what would eventually become Align Lending. It was a bold move, but Samantha’s entrepreneurial spirit and determination were already setting her on a path that would defy the odds.
By 2021, with the world grappling with the COVID-19 pandemic, Samantha decided it was time to take a leap of faith. After more than a decade as a stay-at-home mom, she jumped back into the career world, starting Align Lending as a one-woman show. It was a daunting challenge—working remotely and navigating the complexities of the mortgage industry alone—but Samantha was driven by her passion and vision.
“Starting Align Lending was about more than just opening a business; it was about creating something that aligned with my values and goals,” says Samantha. “I wanted to build a company that not only succeeded but also supported its people and clients in meaningful ways.”
In those early days, Samantha wore all the hats: she was the originator, the marketer, the client relations specialist, and the administrator. But she quickly realized that her brokerage’s true potential could only be reached through the strength of a dedicated team. Samantha began to envision what her ideal team would look like, carefully considering the qualities and skills she wanted in her future employees.
“I knew that to really grow Align Lending, I couldn’t do it alone,” she explains. “I needed a team that was as passionate and committed as I was. I focused on finding people who shared my vision for customer service, integrity, and a desire to build something great.”
A significant milestone for Samantha was creating an environment where her team could thrive. One of her biggest goals was to purchase a building that would serve as a dedicated workspace for her team. She envisioned a hybrid work environment where employees had the flexibility to work remotely while also having a collaborative space for team interactions. On July 1st, 2024, that vision became a reality when Align Lending purchased its very own building.
“Having our own building is a game-changer,” Samantha shares. “It’s not just about having a physical space; it’s about giving my team a place where they can come together, collaborate, and feel like they’re part of something bigger. It’s about fostering a sense of community and belonging, whether they’re working from home or in the office.”
By the time Align Lending celebrated its third anniversary on September 4th, 2024, it had transformed from a solo venture into a thriving mortgage brokerage with 20 talented originators on board. Samantha’s careful approach to hiring and her emphasis on creating a supportive, growth-oriented work environment has been key to the company’s success.
“Align Lending has always been about more than just closing loans—it’s about helping people achieve their homeownership dreams with the highest level of care and professionalism,” says Samantha. “And that’s something we can only do by having a strong, cohesive team.”
As Samantha looks to the future, her goals remain ambitious. She envisions Align Lending continuing to grow, expanding its reach, and consistently setting higher standards in the mortgage industry. But at its core, her mission remains the same: to build a company that truly aligns with the values of integrity, teamwork, and exceptional service.

Samantha Shelton is an independent mortgage broker and the owner of Align Lending. She began her journey back into the career world in 2019 after being a stay-at-home mom for over a decade. Inspired by her husband’s nearly 20-year career in the mortgage industry, Samantha decided to pursue her own path in mortgages, leveraging the knowledge she had gained from his experiences. She took a leap of faith and joined the wholesale channel in 2020, during the height of the pandemic when the world was shut down. Determined to succeed, Samantha completed all her testing, background checks, and fingerprints, even driving to Ohio when Michigan was shut down, demonstrating her commitment to achieving her goals from start to finish. Her perseverance and dedication laid the foundation for what would become Align Lending, a thriving brokerage that reflects her passion and resilience.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Align Lending is known in the market for her unwavering belief that a brand should speak for itself, even when no one is watching. At Align Lending, this philosophy shines through in their commitment to serving the community—not just as mortgage brokers, but as neighbors and familiar faces who are actively involved in local life. What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
One of the hardest lessons I had to unlearn as a business owner was letting go of the individualistic mindset I carried from my background in sales. Before becoming a stay-at-home mom, my experience was rooted in sales, where success often meant going it alone and focusing solely on personal performance. When I ventured into mortgage lending, I initially approached it with that same outlook, believing that individual achievements were the ultimate measure of success. But I quickly realized that this mindset didn’t foster the type of cohesive and collaborative environment I wanted for Align Lending. I needed to unlearn the idea that titles, loan volume, or personal accomplishments defined a team’s worth. Instead, I learned that the true power of a successful business lies in a well-oiled team where everyone participates, feels valued, and shares their knowledge openly. Creating an environment where each team member feels comfortable and encouraged to contribute was a lesson that required intention and effort on my part, but it’s been instrumental in our growth. Now, I truly believe that we are far better off thriving together as a unified team rather than as a group of individuals.
