We recently connected with Samantha Moran and have shared our conversation below.
Samantha, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s talk legacy – what sort of legacy do you hope to build?
My goal in becoming an author is to show others, especially my children, that they can achieve their dreams.
I’ve wanted to write books for as long as I can remember. My dream began in middle school when I joined my local library’s poetry club, but as I got older, it fell by the wayside. I graduated, went to college, and began a career as an educator. The responsibilities piled up. I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Then came kids. Overtime, I lost myself to the grind. One day, I realized I wanted more.
So, I started writing again. It’s been a whirlwind, and I’ve never worked harder for anything in my life, but I know that my efforts are building something. I’m creating worlds where readers can find themselves or lose themselves. I’m showing others with disabilities that they can still go after their goals. That knowledge is beautiful, and every single day, my kids see me doing what I love. I hope it inspires them to do the same.
Samantha, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Personally, I have a Bachelor’s in English Secondary Education and am a proud Magna Cum Laude graduate of Western Michigan University. (Go Broncos!) I’m also mom to two amazing children and have been happily married since 2015. I have Multiple Sclerosis, which sometimes severely impacts my ability to use my hands, but I haven’t let it stop me yet! Oh, I’m a nerd, too. I love to read tarot and playing Dungeons and Dragons, plus I spend a lot of time reading books and writing.
Does your business have multiple or supplementary revenue streams (like a ATM machine at a barbershop, etc)?
In addition to writing, I utilize my English educator training to provide editing and proofreading services for other authors at affordable rates. This allows me to help support the indie author community while also supplementing my income. I provide book formatting services, too, for the same reasons.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspects of being an author are getting to see the stories in my head come to life and meeting the readers who love them. Every time I get to meet a new reader, I realize I’m making a difference. In the past, I’ve had readers tell me my stories have made them feel seen, that my books have provided them with an outlet for trauma and stressful situations, that my stories have helped them heal, and that my books have given them a new way to see (a reader with visual impairments said this to me). I’m forever grateful to know my words can provide those things.
