We were lucky to catch up with Sam(antha) Lynagh recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Sam(antha) thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you wish you had waited to start your own firm or do you wish you had started sooner?
On the last day of 2019, a friend and I traded our yearly goals written on bar napkins. With blind faith in the year 2020, we swore to hold each other to those cocktail contracts. It might have been just under the wire, but on December 27th, I closed on my first home with her as my Realtor.
I got the home, but I never stopped looking. I love helping people find homes. From knowing every house on the market in my hometown in high school to helping my friends find apartments in college, I have always been the go-to gal for home hunting. I always assumed I would eventually get my license; it’s anyone’s guess why I thought the time to get it was always “later”.
As much as I wish I would have started years ago, I couldn’t have lucked into a better home to hang my license. EXIT Real Estate Experts East has become where I see myself growing professionally and personally for years to come. I am also extremely honored to have been chosen as the Engagement Leader for our office by my broker, Elizabeth Lawson. I know middle-school-me would be proud to see where I am today.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Sam… and Lynagh… depending on where and who you ask.
First and foremost, I am a dreamer. That’s the only way someone ends up wearing as many hats as I do.
A quick answer would be I am a REALTOR® and a recording Artist. I have a Bachelor of Music in Songwriting from Berklee College of Music, music released on all streaming platforms, and an unofficial “Master’s in Performance” (as my mom likes to call it) from playing full-time on Nashville’s Broadway for two years. You can find my music on all streaming platforms under “Lynagh” and you can look out for “Slow” coming out in late August.
Being a REALTOR® is more than just a job for me; it’s a commitment to making a positive impact by helping people find their safe place to land. My mission is to be a reliable guide, armed with a team of experts, through the ‘crossing t’s’ portion of a home purchase. With education, inclusion, and a little bit of silliness I bring confidence to my clients… and I keep it fun.
The other hats? I am the Queen of Many Projects. One close to fruition is a children’s book I hope to have published in 2025. I also book the musicians for a bar in downtown Nashville and am always excited to watch my co-writers release more songs I had a hand in writing.
Most importantly, I hope readers take away that I am not afraid to jump in and do the work. Secondarily, I wouldn’t mind them knowing I like to keep life creative. I believe business can be fun and successful.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
I read “You Are A Bad*ss” by Jen Sincero in 2020. This book was the first one that truly got through to me and shifted the way I saw myself and the world. I genuinely am still experiencing the after-effects of digesting her advice. The most impactful lesson is on subconscious beliefs. It’s in chapter one and I still think about it on a weekly basis.
Basically, we become limited by a collection of “subconscious truths” that we learn from others or our childhood environments. These become rules we follow but never necessarily examine and they can cause the dissonance where we see the most chaos in our lives.
I was unsatisfied with who I was becoming and I could not understand some of my challenges. When I stepped back and examined what I believed to be fundamental truths, I suddenly took back control of my life.
To give an example, I realized I associated cleanliness with dishonesty and messiness with failure. So I was stuck in a loop of being frustrated with myself if I was clean or messy. Recognizing this allowed me to redefine these things and start to let go.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
The first time I went to Vegas, I was paid to go. A company had hired me, flown me out, and put me up on the strip to sing. I was 24 and could not believe that this was real life. The pride I felt, however, could not scare away whatever bug had gotten to me.
Looking back, I am pretty sure I had walking pneumonia. I could barely talk and I had to sing my songs in drastically lower keys. But I was hired to sing twice a day (5 hours) for a week, and I was not going to let that opportunity go to waste. So I used every trick I knew in the book. I locked myself in the bathroom in my hotel room between sets, just breathing in the steam from the shower. I drank gallons of tea and I mainly ate soup.
My efforts paid off. No one suspected I wasn’t at peak performance, and I was invited back with a full band the next year.
