Samantha Joule, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear you experience with and lessons learned from recruiting and team building.
I started my business in 2017 while I was living a nomadic lifestyle. The entire company consisted of myself, my jeep, and my laptop. I would travel around the country from one Wi-Fi hotspot to the next, bootstrapping a technical writing and content marketing business from the bottom up.
Today, Axiom Communications Inc. has grown into a family of brands that now includes a social media company called Axiom Social, a legal marketing company called Colorado Legal Marketing, and a thought leadership and environmental advocacy platform called Be Decent. The organization is managed by myself as well as two full-time employees who each oversee a team of contractors, and I am so grateful to be supported by such a wonderful team. However, recruiting an amazing team is easier said than done.
The first place I reach out to whenever I want to make new hires is my own network. Often, finding the right person is just a matter of reaching out to friends and colleagues and asking for recommendations. Whenever I need to cast a wider net, I reach out to the alumni networks and career services office at my alma maters, Florida Atlantic University and Vermont Law School. I’ve been able to connect with wonderful people with this approach who are really eager to start their careers at a women-owned / women-led small business in the creative services industry. This approach has brought me great success in the hiring and recruitment space, so I stick with it!

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I am a domestic violence survivor. This experience has not only allowed me to discover how truly resilient I can be in the face of extreme adversity, but it has also placed me on a path toward a degree of personal empowerment that today I am able to share with others.
Anyone who has suffered physical, sexual, or mental abuse can speak to how disabling the experience can be. More often than not, it leaves a victim with a sense that they are powerless to stop people from harming them. That’s certainly how I felt at the time, but not anymore.
Today, I spend my life empowering and encouraging people to succeed in whatever they are passionate about. For me, that’s environmental advocacy and entrepreneurship, and the success I’ve had in these spaces have helped me stand taller and stronger. I hope to use my skills and experience to help others like me do the same.
Not everyone has suffered at the hands of an abuser in the same way that I have. But in this life, we have all suffered. We have all been faced with challenges we never thought we could live through, and yet here we remain. And just like me, you have a purpose here. If you need help discovering it, just reach out!
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
Having a highly skilled team is great, but having a highly motivated one is even better.
The people behind Axiom Communications Inc. – including me, two full-time employees, and more than a dozen contractors located across the U.S. and SouthEast Asia – are the fuel that keep the machine moving. Although I stated the business myself just five years ago, today I could not imagine running it without my team. As a result, I make it a high priority in my business to invest in team morale and retention. This gets easier each year as we grow a little larger and achieve stronger cash flow – of course! – so we’ve been able to extend employee benefits from just annual bonuses to bonuses, profit share options, professional advancement opportunities, and even an employee company retreat!
I love and cherish the people in my life who support me, and that includes the people who work for my company. I make a constant effort to make sure my contractors and employees are not just treated as the professionals they are, but the valued collaborators I want them to become.
