We recently connected with Samantha Jo Harvey and have shared our conversation below.
Samantha Jo, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you share an important lesson you learned in a prior job that’s helped you in your career afterwards?
I danced for 10 years with the Radio City Rockettes and lived the dancer life in NYC/LA for 12 years. There’s no real way to prepare for the pressure of auditions, learning choreography extremely fast, cramped in rooms with hundreds of women all vying for the same position. You’re navigating the mental + emotional landscape trying to do your best and then also praying you’re the right height, shape, weight, size, hair color, style, aka the right ‘everything’ to actually book the job. This one piece of advice shifted all auditions for me: ‘Dance as if you already booked the job’. Walk into the room as if it’s already yours. Perform as if you already have the role.
Be the committed, responsible powerhouse, before you have the job/promotion/clients. Be the dedicated, health-conscious exerciser before you have the optimal health. Be the loving, passionate, confident lover, before you have the partner. Be the bold, risk-taking, empowered woman before you have the confidence.
Most people think they’ll feel good AFTER they achieve the goal, but the way to truly attract what you desire is to BE the version of you that already has the thing NOW. (How many people hustle their way to a goal only to feel nothing when they achieve it…it’s because achieving the ‘thing’ isn’t going to change how you feel, it’s an inside job, not an external one. The ‘being’ has to come first).
This is a core tenet of my teaching now as a quantum mindset coach and intuitive business mentor. You attract what you are, not what you want. Act as if, then you become, then you manifest. Whether it’s a goal in your health, your finances, your business or your relationships, by acting as if you already have it, you’ll put yourself into the future mindset now, which will have you taking inspired-action now, which will have you manifesting + achieving your goals faster than you could imagine. This is how you quantum leap. (And it makes life way more fun).
Samantha Jo, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m Samantha Jo Harvey, performance and optimization coach, intuitive business mentor, guide and quantum activator for high-achievers, teams and businesses.
After leaving my decade-long career as a Radio City Rockette and Nike Master Trainer, initiating a divorce, building two multiple 6-figure businesses, and navigating challenges with grief, self-judgement, burnout and perfection, I learned that results were easy to find, but fulfillment and freedom were a different story.
Whether in the business space, consulting coaches, business owners and teams on productivity, mindfulness and sales energetics, or in the personal space supporting multi-faceted, high-achievers in breaking through the ‘should’s’ and societal expectations so they can be their fullest selves and live a life they love, I’m obsessed with supporting my clients in elevating their health, wealth, and relationships.
Through mindset, energetics, embodiment and variety of healing modalities and growth strategies, I teach my clients how to master their mindsets, create unshakeable confidence, and optimize results with ease.
Can I brag on my clients for a sec?
Whether it’s in 1:1 mentorship, online group programs, or corporate settings, my clients have:
*exploded their confidence + fulfillment levels
* left their 9-5’s to travel the world
* walked away from unfulfilling relationships
* built side hustles into multiple 6-7 fig businesses
* ignited the fire in their intimate relationships
* received promotions + bonuses in their corporate jobs
* developed insane self-trust
* fallen in love with taking care of their bodies
* purchased their dream homes…
And created epic results all while taking care of themselves mind, body and spirit.
I’ve trained on mindset, business + energetics across the US and internationally, host the Full Out podcast on Spotify + iTunes, regularly take ballet and pole classes and love dropping the f*bomb!
I find that many coaches fit a certain box… you’ve got the super feminine, crystal adorned, tan flowy dress wearing coach, or the lipsticked, results-driven powerhouse coach, or the strictly mindset in the box coach, or the all-in-your-feelings embodiment coach… and I say fck the box. You are a multi-faceted human who doesn’t fit in the box. Neither do I. My unique background, skillset and training allows me to be whoever I need to be for the highest alignment of the client in front of me.
Calling all ambitious, multi-faceted high achievers ready to take their health, business/finances, or relationship to the next level…grab your crown, we ride at dawn.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Being fully me. There is a lot of pressure to ‘niche’ down, to appear a certain way, or to not show certain parts of you, but this is what I built my platform on. I believe people want to work with humans who have experienced real life things. They work with people they know like and trust. Don’t be afraid to rock the boat. Don’t be afraid to offend people. In fact, I say be so you that you DO rock the boat. I’d rather have 100 people who are obsessed with my work and know it’s going to change their lives, than 1 million people who don’t really care. The more ‘you’ you can be, the more you’ll attract your people. If you’re not fully you, your people won’t be able to find you.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One of the best mindset shifts for high-achievers is this: move from ‘needing to be perfect’ to ‘showing up in excellence’.
My generation was taught that we are loved when we achieve. Get straight A’s, get ice cream. Have the solo in the school show, mom and dad love you. Achieve, be perfect, get external validation and words of affirmation from your parents. Perfectionism becomes a survival mechanism we learn by the age of 7.
While perfectionism served me in so many ways (scholarships, valedictorian of my college, etc), it also came with some pretty intense side effects like anxiety, stress, analysis paralysis and procrastination, all of which make the experience of achieving pretty crappy. On one hand the brain says, ‘you need to be perfect to get love + affection’, but at the same time the body is saying ‘This is terrible, I’m in constant fight or flight stress response and life feels pretty miserable’.
As a recovering perfectionist I joke that my 10-year career with the Rockettes was a full manifestation of my perfectionist tendencies as the company is known as the world’s greatest precision dance troupe. The first half of my career was racked with pressure, tons of anxiety, upset stomaches and sleepless nights before live tv performances like the Today Show, SNL and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. But as I dove into the world of personal development, emotional intelligence and spirituality/energetics this giant shift was presented to me.
Instead of ‘needing to be perfect’, could I show up ‘in excellence’ instead?
This shift gave me back my power.
When you’re needing to be perfect, you’re relying on external factors for approval. It takes you out of the driver seat and essentially leaves you powerless. You run around like a chicken with your head cut off, feeling the need to perform, to overdeliver, to fit a mold to be accepted.
No matter how hard you try, you can’t be perfect. Perfect doesn’t exist. Perfect is subjective and based upon outside opinions.
Excellence on the other hand, is a way of being. Ways of being are generated internally.
You can choose everyday to show up in excellence. Excellence is giving your best effort, playing full out with heart, with passion, with full commitment. It doesn’t mean it’ll be perfect, or mistakes won’t happen, but it’s so much more achievable with a lot less stress because it is generated by YOU (not by anything outside of you).
Excellence over perfection will give you years of your life back. And it’ll feel fcking good too.
