We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Samantha Gordon. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Samantha below.
Samantha, appreciate you joining us today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
I took a risk on leaving my 9-5, to blog, and I’m glad that I did. I always knew I wanted to be my own boss–my great-grandfather(army vet) had a lot to do with that. He was his own boss running a travel agency business, after his many years serving in the army. He taught me almost everything I know in regards to business and he really gave me the blueprint to it all. He believed in me the most, even when my ideas were crazy–he’d tell me to figure it out and make it make sense lol. I left my 9-5 in 2019, for many reasons but the top reasons were, I wanted to be home with my kids full time, and I felt like the whole “get up, go to work, come home, spend only a few hours with my kids before bed and then do it all over agin” life wasn’t one that I enjoyed nor desired. Having a creative spirit, that gets old super quick. I wanted so much more. So, I just went for it! I had two kids (then at ages 3 &2), and with no heavy savings in my bank account. I mapped out my vision, plan and what I needed to execute. I knew that I wanted to write and I wanted to make cool mom merch. Both things that I could do/be my most authentic creative self. Mind you, I always kept in the back of my mind was my great grandfather telling me to make it make sense. So, I started a lifestyle blog. I’m into sharing my discoveries, experiences, expertise, tips and hacks on everything that I love and live by—mothering my children, entrepreneurship, lifestyle and pleasures. From then, I started an online shop through my blog. All things for a mom(tees, hoodies, accessories, etc.). My blog readers and merch sales started to rise rapidly. It was a snowball effect from there. I got the opportunity to feature in Elle Magazine for a mother’s day campaign, I’ve done video content with BuzzFeed talking all things motherhood, my writing has been featured/published in Sheen magazine and Black Moms Blog–of course on the topics of motherhood and self-care, and I’ve got a handful of features under my belt. This is all from taking just one risk. I couldn’t be more thankful. I know to the average person, leaving your job to blog…sounds a bit crazy, but it worked and I’m here with not just a successful lifestyle blog, but a kids clothing line and flower business…and it all started with blogging. I now get to be my own boss while enjoying all things I love to do.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a mom of two and creative entrepreneur. I’m the founder and lead creative behind Wilde Honey Flower House (floral design), and Wilde Honey Kids(kids clothing). I also have a lifestyle blog where I house all of my thoughts. I’m into sharing my discoveries, experiences, expertise, tips and hacks on everything that I love and live by—mothering my children, entrepreneurship, lifestyle and pleasures. I make cool streetwear merch for mothers/women. I first tapped into my creative journey through my blog. From there it was a snowball effect.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I really, really pride myself on being 100% authentic and personal with my audience, also I source/provide nothing but the best of product–everything from clothing to coffee mugs.
We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
Now, Wilde Honey Flower House, my floral design house was first a hobby, then turned side hustle during the pandemic…and is now a full time business. I would share my floral designs on my blog and social media which got the word out(I really wasn’t even trying to make it a business–just sharing my love for floral design, but people starting flowing in with inquiries. I booked my first wedding which was a huge game changer for me, and things just grew from there. I plan to have a storefront in the near future..the cutest flower shop where you can come in and get your weekly floral and the yummiest coffe/tea.
