We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Samantha Goldman. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Samantha below.
Hi Samantha, thanks for joining us today. What do you think Corporate America gets wrong in your industry?
Hi! Thank you so much for inviting me. Honestly, I never really thought of the therapy world as Corporate America, but even hospitals are run by bigger corporations now. And funny enough, I really created my online course and membership to solve a problem in the industry that I faced while working in it. Occupational therapists and feeding therapists are wonderful, and we do amazing things to help families with their child’s development and eating. But unfortunately, even hospitals are still a business and there is an undeniable focus on making money in the outpatient world. There are also so many hoops you have to jump through to ensure compliance and work with insurance. This ends up with overworked therapists seeing 16 children a day for only 30 minutes sessions. There is only so much a therapist can do in 30-minutes session. By the time you pick up the child and family, walk them to the therapy gym, and help the child feel comfortable, the session is over! So you really maximize every single minute you get focusing on the child. But sometimes, that leaves the parent without the education they really needed to help their child at home.
So I actually created my programs to combat this! My courses are NOT occupational or feeding therapy. Rather, I created education resources as a supplement for parents, so they could learn and apply these techniques confidently at home.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hi friends! I’m Sam, but my clients love to call me Dr. Sam. My mission is to help families bring the magic back into their mealtimes. The parents that I support dream of their child having a happy, healthy relationship with food. But when their child has feeding challenges and just won’t eat, they’re left feeling lost, concerned, and like a bad parent. Through my experience as an occupational therapist, I saw first-hand how these eating difficulties not only affected a child’s health but their family dynamics. And so I was empowered to do something about it. I realized that parents were lacking the resources and guidance they needed to feed their child. So, I made them myself! In my exclusive Food Explorers Membership I teach parents how to create peaceful, no-pressure mealtimes where you can spend time connecting with your family instead of focusing on food battles with your child. And in my Food Fearers to Food Explorers course I teach parents how to help their child overcome “sensory issues” at the table so they can start exploring and trying new foods.
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
Clients are not just numbers to me. I want every family that joins my community to feel like they have received Disney level service, from their first interaction with me to the last. We have live Q&A sessions every month where parents get to chat with me about where they are struggling. But they can also keep in touch with me throughout the month! I do my very best to respond to their emails, comments, and Facebook group posts quickly, and then I spend hours breaking down their struggles and success to figure out how I can help them even more.
I think just the simple act of truly caring about your clients and listening to them creates a strong community. I am so passionate about helping each and every one of them finally find relief at the table.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Instagram (@DrSamGoldman)! I am very active on Instagram and I consistency post stories, reels, and posts answering my communities questions and concerns. Although I have a small account, I focus on building relationships and offering quality content, and this helps families feel excited and confident when they decide to work with me.
