We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Samantha Games. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Samantha below.
Samantha, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I learned how to crochet by taking just a basic class offered by my favorite local yarn store. It taught all the basic stitches I would need to make just about anything. From there it was just a matter of finding the patterns that interested me.
I’m not sure if there was much of anything to do to speed up the learning process as fiber arts is more of a practiced craft than anything. You get better at it the more you work with it and that’s what I did.
Being able to read a pattern I would say is the most important skill. While different designers word things a little different certain abbreviations are consistent throughout all patterns and once you know them you can make just about anything.

Samantha, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I got into fiber arts as a way to keep my hands busy. I have a bad personal habit that I was trying to keep at bay by doing something with my fingers. It started with finger knitting hats, scarves and blankets. After a while though I came to the realization that I was going to have to branch out and make different things. That’s how I stumbled into crochet. It allows me to make cute little things that people enjoy. Some have practical uses while others are just cute to look at. From stuffed toys to crochet bags with liners that can be used for just about anything I enjoy making many different things.
I am most proud of the way I construct my items. They are rather sturdy and can hold up to a lot of things. When it comes to the stuffed toys I tend to stuff them on the firm side because I would rather have something substantial to hold on to rather than grasping at air. It makes for a toy that holds it shape despite being squished and squeezed within an inch of its life.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I enjoy it when people enjoy my work. When a child gets start eyed over a crochet spider despite being uncomfortable around live ones. I love it when people pick up something I made and marvel at how soft it is. Pretty much the best feeling is when people love something just as much as I adored making it.

How did you build your audience on social media?
To be honest I don’t really understand social media. I know the key to gaining an audience is posting often and using the right tags and such but I enjoy making pieces rather than taking pictures.
I am still learning myself how to suce social media effectively. It’s hard, but I know I’ll get there eventually.
