We recently connected with Samantha Frederick and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Samantha, thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
My mission has shifted. At the beginning it was an adventure now it’s my way of life.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I go by Sam. I am 34 years old. I have a smart, loving and funny 15 year old son and a very lazy adorable golden doodle named Best. I currently own Depiction Tattoo Gallery in Arlington Texas. Depiction tattoo is going on it’s 12 year in business we are a custom, appointment based studio offering the highest quality tattoo/piercing and experience . I am currently planning our Second annual Tattoo convention with my partners. The convention is called The Tattoo Collectors Expo which also takes place in Arlington Texas August 12-15 2022. I am in the process of starting a street style “walk in” tattoo studio in downtown Arlington with a couple of partners. The studio will be called Space Monkey and it will be open later this year. I am a single mom. I help take care of my mom who happens to live next door to me. I’m pretty busy all of the time but I love it. I love my job. I love the people I work with. I feel so thankful for all of people I’ve interacted with and for all of the experiences I’ve had good and bad thus far. I hate being uncomfortable, who doesn’t but I’m constantly putting myself in uncomfortable situations that help me grow and make me a stronger, hopefully better person.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Owning a business is hard. Being a good parent is hard. Relationships are hard. Life is hard! When things look grim we often forget it could probably be worse and really we are so lucky just to be alive!!!!!
When my son was only one years old his father, my love was killed in a car accident. I was lost I wanted to quit but how could I when I had this beautiful happy baby and It was all on me now to show this child how to be a good human. I stepped up worked 3 or 4 jobs at a time and barley made it work then I decided to take the leap and open depiction. It was so risky and not many of my friends or family thought it seemed like a great idea. Owning and running a business can be overwhelming especially while raising a child. Probably at least once a year I would get overwhelmed and think what am I doing!?? About 3 years ago I really felt like giving up on the tattoo shop and doing something totally different. I connected with a business coach and she helped me think bigger and realize what opportunities I already had in front of me. One thing lead to another and the expo came into fruition. It’s all hardwork but it’s also all worth it.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I the consistency is a key factor in maintaining a good reputation. Even if I was stressed or In Question of our success, I didn’t show it or make anyone feel worried. I try to be as present as possible at the studio to let my co workers and clients know that I respect them and that I don’t expect more out of them than I’m willing to give. Another big factor is customer service. We have been fortunate enough to have an amazing woman named Tenley is the shop manager. She is the peace keeper. She is the beautiful face our clients see when they come in and the kind voice on the phone. We All respect one another and our clients. We have been doing so for a long time and hope to continue to do so for many years In the future.
