We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Samantha Flunory a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Samantha, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today. So, let’s start with a hypothetical – what would you change about the educational system?
As an educator who has worked in a variety of settings, one thing I would change about the system is how students are taught to navigate their world. We want students to be able to graduate from high school and be successful in their world…. but how ? Most of their hours are spent in a classroom where the education is teacher directed. Children should be able to opt into courses that they believe are beneficial for the goals they have in life. They should be taught real life skills and the majority of the lessons should be student led. The educational system right now is an, “One size fit all” model. It should be shifted to focus on the individual needs of all.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
I’ve always had a passion for teaching and started my career as a Teacher straight out of High School. After teaching for a few years, I realized that the impact that I want to make can not be done solely in the classroom. I thought to myself, with my own program I can set a vision and still be able to follow my passion. I would often have parents reach out to me asking me to help my students beyond what I offered in the classroom. I started Seeds to Flowers Childcare because I wanted to be a support to children and their families without the limitations put on me due to my workplace. I am still new to the market; at the moment I offer affordable tutoring sessions. Over the next few years I plan to branch out further to providing full day childcare services.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The support that I receive is solely from my current clients spreading the word to their families and friends.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I believe that the connections that I have made with my students is what has helped build my reputation. Working with students is what I love to do. When I put my love in with my expertise I am able to build life long relationships with my clients.
