We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Samantha Dowell a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Samantha, thanks for joining us today. What sort of legacy are you hoping to build. What do you think people will say about you after you are gone, what do you hope to be remembered for?
The legacy I’m hoping to build is foundations for generational wealth within my community. I want to be remembered for helping all races not just my culture because we all need help. What people will say about me is that I accomplish anything I put my mind to, I’m a great mother, a friend , and an advisor. I want to be remembered for giving back to the community and changing lives for the better, one step at a time .

Samantha, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Samantha Dowell I am the CEO of Element_Stylez LLC. I am a licensed cosmetologist located in Los Angeles as well as a licensed instructor now. I build my name based off I love to help others and make them look good it doesn’t matter what color shape or form. I’m proud of the many things I’ve accomplished this far being 31 years old I have been licensed since 2014 next year 2024 will make 10 years. I’m forever grateful for the experiences and the people I came across on my path towards success. My goal is to give back to the community wether threw my hair services or me teaching or me just giving back to the community all together. I love to help regardless who you are.

What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
Yes it truly did. When I first became a licensed cosmetologist it still was a side hustle for me. I then proceeded to get lil jobs here and there and would service my clients after work. I then went to a trade school for certified nursing assistant program and received my certificate for that. I took my cna license and used jt as a career for almost 3 years I quit during the pandemic when the schools began to open back up. Only because my supervisor wouldn’t let me take a leave of absence for two months to make sure I get my son together for him to start school again physically. She did approve my two months but I never went back due to how I sacrificed for a company that didn’t care about my family in the time of need. Anyways while working as a nurse I began to sit back and think I proceeded to then get my llc for element stylez I had the name for the longest and I feel I have no preference in people or hairstyles so the name is perfect for me. I worked on my llc sellers permit business permit and my website all because I thought I would open an online beauty supply I still might. Besides that I thought to myself I never really took my cosmetology license as a career so I’m like ok maybe I can do this full time and still be able to have a flexible schedule etc. and that’s exactly what I did June 2021. I haven’t looked back since I kept my faith In god and kept my eyes on the bigger picture. You may not understand the path your goin on but it’s for a reason.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The best source of new clients for me is the booking app I use styleseat . Also I get most of my clients threw word of mouth or referrals. Social media platforms will help you as well along the way. Also promote yourself and be your own model.
