We recently connected with Samantha Colella and have shared our conversation below.
Samantha , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
Starting my brand The V Spot 101 was a life-changing risk that I will be forever grateful that I took. Starting a brand (especially one called The V Spot) was difficult because it made me vulnerable and open to the world. My brand is an extension of the person I am. I have always made my path in life and have never regretted being the authentic person I am. So starting a brand around me is not taken with open arms at times, but it is who I am and I am continuing to grow with my followers.
Of course, the internet is the internet and there is hate, but I have been able to become stronger because of the adversity on these sensitive topics. I intend to change the standards set for girls and teach them that less is more and that what you are comfortable with is perfect. Especially be proud of who you are and your story because you are one of a kind and you should own it.

Samantha , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have always been a businesswoman. I ran a little salon out of my room when I was 8, sold bracelets with my cousin when I was 11, and started my own custom dessert business when I was 13. Business has been my lifestyle, so it was inevitable that I would study it and officially start my own. After dropping out of high school at 16 and then starting college before 17, I knew that business was my path. In college, I have received awards for my GPA and am currently pursuing my MBA, which I will receive by 21.
Growing up I was always independent and had a very strong sense of myself (and still do), but I did not understand that my individuality made me a target. In high school, I would always dress up and do my makeup as well as in college, so it made me stand out. It took time, but I learned that my individuality is a gift and I should make the most of it. So once I started dating I did not falter from the person I am. I have many interesting and comical dating experiences and luckily I have a thick skin, but thought that my story and struggles should be heard. If I went through all of these different experiences someone must be able to relate … and that is why I started The V Spot 101. I am teaching girls how to gain confidence and harness it to use the power they have for their benefit. Dating, makeup, and fashion are all facets of life that I have struggled with and luckily I was able to learn or had mentors who helped me to become the woman I am today. So now I am going to be that role model and mentor to other women. Life is not easy and when it comes to matters of the heart people can be deluded. To prevent some dating mistakes, have others laugh at my bizarre dating stories, learn some makeup tips, gain fashion advice, or just learn something … that is where The V Spot 101 steps in.
What I take great pride in is the community I have created. I want girls and guys for that fact to feel safe and understand that societal expectations are not the principal. I want my community (The Sisterhood) to create themselves and to own themselves. I am creating a space for people to be able to go after what they want and not what is expected of them in dating. Through my blog and other platforms, I share stories and advice like what to do on a first date, how to impress a guy, and how to be a genuine person. I am emphasizing that less is more and quality people are well-respected, achieve their goals, and create a positive and fulfilling lifestyle for themselves. I was blessed growing up in the family I have and want to instill the wisdom and lessons they have in me in my community.

Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
Networking! Talk to people and get to know them, even if they are opposite of you, and what you want to do, learn from them. Everyone is knowledgeable, whether it be about data analytics, how to pair the perfect wine with any meal, or quantum physics. Everyone has lived a different life and has a different perspective on the world, learn from everyone. There are billions of stories and lessons to learn, people have lived much longer than you and much shorter than you, so understand these people.
Reading! Even pick up a book or read an article about anything. Trust me it will help you develop as a person and become respectable and a force to be reckoned with. I had to read a book that mentioned brain scanning (fMRI), months later I brought this up in one of my courses and became the star pupil without knowing much more than its use for marketing purposes. Becoming worldly and knowledgeable in many different categories will only aid you.
The News! I had a professor drill this into our heads, but it is the most important lesson I have learned in college. Be knowledgeable about the world and what is going on. You should want to know what people are talking about because this can only help your professional and creative careers. With diverse and eclectic knowledge of the world, you will be “ a million miles ahead of everyone”. In this day and age, it is important to learn and exercise your brain because fewer people are, so to get ahead and stay ahead, read the news!

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect is to see that I am helping people. I have struggled like every other human in the world and I am glad that the lessons I have learned are valuable to others. I have been able to show people close to me that blazing your path is always an option, and now I have been able to show others. Also learning every day has been extremely rewarding. I have been able to test out different formats, strategies, and content, and exercise the importance of SEOs. In my life, I intend to learn and grow every day, so The V Spot 101 has been wonderful.
