We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Samantha Burmeister a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Samantha, thanks for joining us today. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
There are so many good copywriters out there with myriad backgrounds, but I come from sales. I believe that all copy is sales copy, but it should never feel ‘salesy’. Instead, great copy that converts educates people – it tells them why you’re different, how you can solve their problems, and what moving forward with you will do for them in the long run!
Samantha, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I spent nearly a decade in corporate sales roles – first in B2C finance, then IT hardware, then IT research sales. What it made me really good at is explaining complex, often ‘scary’, topics to people in a way that they understand, then helping them understand exactly why they need it.
However, I always wanted to travel long-term, and my job wasn’t conducive to that. So, in 2019, I quit my corporate role and set out to be a travel writer. That came to a screeching halt at the beginning of 2020, and I missed sales. So, I’ve been combining my love of writing and my love of sales ever since then!
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I am on a mission to visit every country before I turn 50, while working for myself.
This means that I work from a lot of cafe’s, AirBnbs, friends’ houses, and more. It’s also why I called my company Nomad Copy Agency – it’s no surprise to find me in either Nevada or Nairobi, South Dakota or South Africa!
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I’m a person first, and a salesperson first professionally. So, people know that they’re getting ME. I put my heart into every launch or project I work on, and if people vibe with the marketing I put out there, it’s a high likelihood that we’ll get along well when we formally start working together!
