We were lucky to catch up with Samantha Bezich recently and have shared our conversation below.
Samantha, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. The first dollar your business earns is always special and we’d love to hear how your brand made its first dollar of revenue.
I started my business in June 2023, but I did not make my first sale until February 2024. The clients I currently had were either helping me build my freelance portfolio, trade for services, or for the accounts I was managing at my full-time job as a marketing professional for a large company.
My first sale was for a personalized Instagram Strategy for a local photographer in Dayton, Ohio. Funny enough, it was for my past sorority sister from college. I graduated in 2021 so that speaks volumes about how impactful past connections can be even if you’re not personally close with that person.
Throughout our Discovery Call, we reconnected and caught up a bit. She expressed how much she admired the work I was doing in my business and how present I am. I try to show as much of my personality as I possibly can online so people can get the real me and know the kind of person they could be working with for their social media marketing efforts. After all, social media is all about connecting!
After getting to know her goals and reviewing what she’d get with the Instagram Strategy, I asked “Are you ready to move forward?” Keep in mind, this was the first time since I had started my business that I got to ask this question so I was internally screaming. And without hesitation, she said “yes” and I began going over the Contract & Invoice process.
We got off the call and I ran to my boyfriend in our office celebrating my first sale. Then that’s when sh*t got real. I GOT TO WRITE UP AND SEND MY FIRST CONTRACT & INVOICE! After waiting about 8 months for a sale to come through, it finally happened. All the hard work, creativity, moments of doubt, patience, and networking had finally paid off. I do believe that had I not taken time to enjoy the process and push myself to network and build a community with other business owners around me, I wouldn’t have enjoyed that time of “no sales” as much. Building my community made the wait worth it and way more fun.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I always knew I was a Creative before I knew what being one even meant. I used to play guitar and write songs in my free time (my most favorite one is the one I wrote for my Papa when he passed away). I loved drawing and painting. Art and Creative Writing were my favorite classes in high school.
In college, I studied Mass Communications/Media Studies and was part of a few student organizations where I held leadership roles that managed social media accounts to highlight the programs and get audiences involved. I had no idea that something like this could be a whole job itself. I just genuinely enjoyed doing it and had a lot of fun with it! I got to host video shoots for recruitment efforts, have fun with photography at events, and connect with so many amazing people.
During my part-time job at the mall, I managed the Instagram account for the shop I worked at. Here, I got to play around with more video concepts, product imagery, and community engagement.
Fast forward to about a year into my senior-year internship as a Content Marketing Intern (and a month before they hired me full-time), I went up to my Manager at the time and bluntly said “Our social media presence sucks. Can I take over?” He didn’t even hesitate. He was ecstatic about the idea. From there I took over all their platforms; LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, X (Twitter), and created a TikTok account to help with recruitment efforts. Ever since then, I’ve been doing Social Media Marketing on a professional/career level.
But something was missing. Did I need a new hobby? A switch in my routine? A break from social media? HAHA!
Turns out, I just needed to start a business!!!
I had always wanted to be an entrepreneur but was never sure of what I wanted to do. Until it dawned on me. Why don’t I just sell services for the very thing I know I’m good at? Social Media Marketing is almost a non-negotiable form of marketing these days and oh-so time-consuming. People would find the value in having those tasks taken off their plate, for sure!
But what would my name be?! Samantha B. Socials.
What’s my vibe?! Being an uplifting and personable thought leader while debunking unnecessary BS social media marketing tactics and providing true strategies that work and empower brands online.
How do I price my services?! Girl, you already know your worth.
What if no one buys?! They will.
What if no one has the budget?! They do or will.
Am I wasting my time?! Hell no.
If only I had the answers to those questions when starting my entrepreneurial journey. Anyways…
I decided that my core services would be Full-Service Social Media Management, Instagram Strategies, VIP Days (Content Shoots), and User-Generated Content (UGC). But since then, I have added optional services such as Monthly 1:1 Social Media Coaching and Virtual Assistant services that include administrative work, blog and email writing, and more.
The “why” behind my services is to lift the weight of planning, creating, posting, engaging, and analyzing social media marketing efforts from business owners’ shoulders so that they can give their attention to other important areas of their businesses or personal life. With my services, I’ve given people time to enjoy going on vacation with their spouses without them worrying about sacrificing their social media presence, a chance to be present in their relationships with clients, more time to spend with their families when otherwise, that time would’ve been used to message or email clients back while they’re out of town, edit a tedious Instagram reel that glitches out every 2 seconds, or spend hours planning content.
My services allow you to be present.
My strategies debunk unrealistic marketing practices (cough, cough, one-second reels or planning a year’s worth of content in an hour).
My approach doesn’t cut corners or seek the easy way out.
My clients can have peace of mind knowing that while they’re out of town, spending extra time with loved ones, or taking a long overdue nap, they have a trusted Social Media Manager working hard to make their goals come to fruition.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
At first, I was creating content that other Social Media Managers were creating and I haaaaated it. I thought that THIS was the content I should be creating but it all seemed very monotone and boring. So one day, I said “eff it” and started creating content that I loved, like vlogs and personal stories, and supplemented it with content to promote my services. The purpose behind my content was to show people the real me, my likes, dislikes, opinions, and anything else that makes me, me. I pushed any imposter syndrome to the back of my mind and just did it.
Even if you don’t have 100% clarity on your approach, just start. Show up. Build post consistency. Create a plan that aligns with your hectic schedule. Play around with all the features a platform offers. If you’re using Instagram, be sure to utilize all post formats (static posts, carousels, reels), as well as going LIVE, collaboration posts, Stories, DMs, shares, saves, comments, and likes.
Share who you are and your story. What do you do? How did you start? How do you help people? What are some client/customer results that have formed through your services or products? Engage with your community and build it from there! The only thing you shouldn’t do is NOT start showing up online. Social media is literally a FREE domain to market your business on. Use it to build your community and bring people to your website to convert into paying customers or clients.
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
My services are specifically shaped to cater to each client’s unique needs and goals. Their stories and pain points are top-of-mind when it comes to providing a solution for them. On top of that, I regularly ask for and implement feedback from clients throughout each partnership as I value client input to help me continue to shape the quality of my services.
I also make sure to stay present in the relationships I have with clients. I will never go ghost nor will they ever feel out of the loop. My clients will always know about the next steps and are regularly updated. Whether it’s through email or text, my clients hear from me regularly.
