We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Samantha Amazan a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Samantha, appreciate you joining us today. Looking back, do you think you started your business at the right time? Do you wish you had started sooner or later
I definitely wish I would have started my business sooner. For sure. I started my business in 2020 in the middle of a pandemic. I was happy in my career but my creativity was being stifled and I needed a creative outlet. If I could go back in time, I would have started this journey, in some shape or form, right after college. During the lull between graduating and finding my first job. During this time, I was full of ideas, creativity, and gusto. Instead of channeling all of that into growing a business for someone else, I could have started something of my own that would have grown and flourished during the infant stage of social media. A time before going viral was the signifier of success in your business.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Creativity is a staple for me. Whether is in my personal or professional life, it’s important that I get to be creative in everything I do. Crafting and creating things with my hands have always been an interest of mine. So, with my love for candles and how suddenly I could not love them anymore. created an outlet I desperately needed. For me, lighting a candle creates specific moods and enhances vibes that can vary from relaxation to nostalgia. But, when I could not light candles in my home due to the horrible headaches from the scents, this pushed me to start my entrepreneurial journey into home fragrances.
I quickly realized I could make my own candles that don’t make me, or anyone else, sick. Candles with all organic wax and eco-friendly, clean essential and fragrance oils. I wanted to make a candle that I could burn everyday and not get sick but, most importantly, not get sick of the scent. I wanted my own signature scent for my home.
The Wicked Scent Company provides unique luxury handmade home fragrances, and soon décor, for people that have a desire to be creative in their personal spaces by enhancing their vibe with our products. Our products are formulated to create moods, evoke conversation, and uniquely produced to take our customers on an aromatic journey. Most importantly, our products are modern, aesthetically pleasing, and affordable for all.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
I instituted an Abandoned Cart Program to convert “window shoppers” to new customers. I found that there is a high percentage of customers that receive their abandoned cart order and become returning customers. Because they receive the products they were actually interested in, they end up loving the products and return to purchase more. There are a myriad of reasons why customers abandon carts but, use that opportunity to give customers a reason to talk highly of your business. To me, it is worth the cost of goods given. Abandoned carts is truly an untapped well for potential customers.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
One importantly lesson I had to unlearn is that every business journey is different. Unfortunately, you can’t compare apples to apples in you niche. I found myself comparing my business success to other home fragrance small businesses and thinking I’m failing because my business is not taking off like theirs. I would see businesses that started the same time as mine, sold the same products, etc. and they would have thousands of followers on socials, selling out of products, receiving multiple sales a day, partnering with brick and mortar stores, etc. I would think to myself I’m no where near that kind of success, that I must be failing. But, I had to realize we are not the same. Our business journey is not the same. Therefore my success cannot not be measured against them. This is something that is a constant thing I have to remind my self when imposter syndrome kicks in. But, I just remind myself this business journey, my business journey, is not a race…it’s a marathon.
