We recently connected with Sam Sidney and have shared our conversation below.
Sam, appreciate you joining us today. Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
For as long as I can remember, I have been an artist! As a child there was no question when someone asked “what do you want to be when you grow up?” The answer was without a doubt “artist!” I will always be forever grateful that this is my path!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I have created art for most of my life. In my adult life I was mostly doing illustrations. This was an awesome side hustle while raising four children. It wasn’t until the pandemic that I begin working in felt. I was doing art projects daily with my kids to keep them busy and happy. One day we stumbled upon an old box of felt scraps. I made some collages, posted on Instagram and the rest is history. One commission turned into 150, and counting. Small collages turned into 4 feet tall felt collages.
Have you ever had to pivot?
My business growth was heavily dependent on Instagram as so many small businesses are. In December of 2022, I went to log on to Instagram and my account was deleted. I felt as if my whole world came to a haunt, i was crushed. Something that help build my brand was gone in a flash. I was devastated. Two months later I was Able to get my account back as it was a huge miscommunication. And mistake. Those two months off were truly a gift, I was able to present with my family and friends. Put things into perspective and settle a better balance between work and home life. Sometimes the universe gives you what you need. When my account did come back, it felt less important, I realize I created my brand, not social media and no one can take my talent away!
Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
I truly wish I had more of an opinion about NFTs. I am 44, but when it comes to things like NFTs I feel like I am 100! I don’t fully understand what they are. People and friends have mentioned I get into them and turn my art into NFT but I don’t really understand them.
