We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sam Posthumus. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sam below.
Alright, Sam thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I have been drawing and making things for as long as I can remember but it was always a hobby. About twenty years ago I started making my own music and that was my first entry into the public art space. The first time I sold a song I knew that I had found a path and profession that I genuinely enjoyed. I slowly evolved back to my first love, visual art, and have been pursuing that for about a decade. Being able to have a profession that you truly love is a rarity and I am fortunate to have found mine.

Sam, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Sam Posthumus a.k.a. Posthumus Art. I am a visual artist from the midwest U.S. currently residing in Indianapolis. My visual artist journey started about ten years ago when I started painting custom shoes. I moved away from shoes to be able to create more of my own ideas and works. My work is very heavily influenced by my surroundings and the people I encounter in my daily life as well as my perspective on these things. I mostly use acrylics, paint markers, and spray paint to create but I do venture outside of those ‘comfort’ mediums from time to time. Stylistically I would say my art is a combination of street art and endlessly doodling in a sketch book. Bold colors and line work have always been a personal favorite and it features heavily in my pieces.
I create to provoke a response from others, hoping that they can connect with my meaning and inspiration. I do love when people connect with my art for a reason that I never thought of and didn’t intend also. The differences in thought and emotion from person to person is inspiring in itself.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My goal as an artist has always been to afford myself and my family with a livable life while helping as many people as I can along the way.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Go to their shows. Share and like their social media. Let them know you appreciate what they are doing. All of these things are free and go a long way to help the creative ecosystem as well as the individual artist. And if you can, buy their work! Have a piece commissioned. Have an artist paint a mural on your business or home. Need a flier or graphic made? Ask an artist. If you have enough artwork then maybe donate to an artist. Pay their studio rent for a month. Sometimes these things keep an artist going because it’s tough out there
