We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sam Harper a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Sam, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you tell us the backstory behind how you came up with the idea?
bxbbly was created from my love of party planning + decorating and the lack of bachelorette specific services in KC. In October 2023 my bestie got married! As her maid of honor I, of course, planned her bach and quickly realized it was going to be more of a task than I initially thought. I started following all the big bach companies in places like Nashville, Scottsdale, and Austin, I was disappointed in the lack of options here, but I took inspiration from Instagram and Pinterest and had the BEST time with the process! My partner encouraged me to start my own bachelorette planning business, and let me tell you — I thought he had lost it.
The bach came and went, and then the wedding. I missed planning the events and being caught up in the wedding world, and I started daydreaming of what I would call this nonexistent company. Long story short, I bought the domain for bxbbly.com one evening on a whim, and here we are! Hayley’s wedding was October 7th, the domain was purchased October 20th, and bxbbly was launched October 31st. I had absolutely no idea what I was doing, but I knew I could bring something new and fun to KC. I asked Hayley to join me (it didn’t take much to convince her), and that’s exactly what we’re doing!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I was born and raised in the Kansas City Metro (south Olathe/Spring Hill to be exact!), and am definitely a KC girly through and through. I love this community and this city, and of course I love the Chiefs. Tay + Trav & Britt + Pat — if you’re reading this, hit us up next time you need a party planned! I’m a mom of three really cool kids (Jayla 11, Dawson 8, Luna 3), I have the most incredible (and obnoxious, ifykyk) partner who puts up with all of my wild ideas + visions and supports me endlessly. I’m a total homebody, Sunday mornings at the River Market with my little fam are my favorite, I love to travel, brunch with my besties, and of course, throw the most fabulous parties!
bxbbly is KC’s go-to for bachelorette party planning + decorating. Other big cities across the US have companies similar to ours, and we felt like we were the right people to bring the idea here. There truly isn’t anywhere better to meet your besties and celebrate; Kansas City has it all. While we began with bachelorettes, we knew we could work our magic for any type of celebration. We’ve expanded to offer full service party planning + decorating, balloon decor, backdrops, custom apparel, gift bags and party favors, AND we have rentals coming very soon!
At bxbbly, we believe every celebration should be filled with the best vibes, eye-catching decor, and most importantly be a reflection of you. We work with clients of all budgets to bring KC’s party dreams to life, so you can relax and truly enjoy your special moments with your loved ones. We’re committed to creating inclusive events that celebrate every background, ability, and identity of the diverse community we love.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I want everyone to succeed — I’m all about collaboration over competition. Of course I want to win, but I want you to win too and I’ll do whatever I can to help you! I’m very much a “what you see is what you get” type of person, and I can be pretty awkward and weird; I think that makes people feel comfortable around me. I also really do care about your celebrations and am always willing to go above and beyond to make things easier for you! I love what I do, I love everything that bxbbly is and represents and I ensure my work always reflects that!
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Networking, networking, networking. But really — networking. You can’t be afraid to introduce yourself to literally anyone and everyone. Before I even launched bxbbly I reached out to a few people in the wedding community and began making connections immediately. When I meet other creatives and small business owners I always try to find a way to work together. There is truly nothing that has helped grow the biz more than the connections I’ve made along the way. They say it’s all about who you know, and it really is true. We’ve booked so many events because vendor friends or clients have referred us! I can’t stress enough how important it is to make genuine connections if you want to grow and succeed!
