We were lucky to catch up with Sam Hagy recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sam, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
I had been a Orthodontic Assistant for a little under 8 years and after becoming a clinic manager I realized that this was not what I saw myself doing for the next 30 years. So after coming back from vacation, I put in my notice and decided to pursue fitness full time until I figured out what I wanted to do. I was offered a full time position at hygge Fit and later that year was offered the opportunity to take over ownership of the gym. I had only been a fitness instructor for about 3 years and had no idea if I was “ready” to be a gym owner but took the leap and have loved the challenge of being a business owner and the growth I’ve seen in myself over the last year.

Sam, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Before Fit Collective came about, I had been a group fitness instructor for about 3 years. I have had an obsession with working out since I was 17 and being a group fitness instructor has become a hobby + passion. When I decided to own a group fitness studio it was very important to me that everyone that stepped into the gym feels like they are comfortable and met at their current fitness level. To me fitness is absolutely not all about the aesthetics, the benefits are SO much more than that and should be available to anyone who choses to make it a part of their lifestyle. I have loved watching exactly that kind of community grow over the last year and have been proud to be able to foster that kind of environment. When taking a class at Fit Collective, expect to work hard, cheer each other on and leave feeling accomplished. No matter where you’re at in your fitness journey, we’ve got a work out for you!

Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
It HAS to be about the PEOPLE. Every single instructor that works a FitCo is on the same page with leading with every individual person/ client in mind. There is no ego, just a solid relationship and human connection with everyone that walks in the door. Thats what I expect from the team, thats what they can expect from me. I approach my team the same way I would anyone else in my life, how can I support you? How can I help you grow? How can we keep working on the same vision together?

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Word of mouth. We are kind of tucked away in Camp Green BUT I have been very lucky in having extremely supportive clients. A good majority of the people that come into the gym have heard good things about us from a current member and decided to give us a shot.
