We were lucky to catch up with Sam Greer recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sam, appreciate you joining us today. Do you have any thoughts about how to create a more inclusive workplace?
Here at Precision Studios, we are all about inclusion. Being inclusive means EVERYONE, not just some. Being inclusive to me means making an atmosphere that anyone and everyone feels welcome in. The largest goal of mine has been to serve the people who sometimes get overlooked but nonetheless deserve an equal service as anyone else. I have patience and a passion for serving people with intellectual disabilities. We pride ourselves in providing a comforting environment that will cater to each individual that walks through the door to the best of our ability. I have worked in workspaces before that was not as welcoming or as friendly as the environment, we have now at Precision Studios. With our private suites, it allows a more one on one service that allows you to cater solely to that client in the chair. We also work by appointment, with doing that you know exactly what time your appointment is, you have 30 minutes – 1 hour for a service so you never rushed, and we are able to build stronger bonds with our clients. Our clients are more than just clients, they’re family.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Sam Greer. I am married to my beautiful wife Ashley, for 9 years now. We have a wild and rambunctious little boy that is 3 years old. We have owned our barbershop and salon for 4 years now. I have been a licensed barber for 7 years now and my wife has been a cosmetologist for around the same amount of time. We decided to open our own shop because spending so much money on booth rent a week it only made sense for us to not be throwing our money away and we wanted to have the creative freedom to do as we wanted. I worked in a tw0 barbershops prior to opening our own, gaining knowledge and skill along the way. Sometimes you seen things that would be valuable for what you’d want with your own shop, while others you seen what you didn’t want and exactly how not to do or go about doing things. We are all about inclusion and want everyone who walks through the door of our shop to feel welcome. We are obviously a part of the LGBTQ community and sometimes other places cannot seem as welcoming for people like us. We strive to make everyone feel welcome and included. Also had working in other barbershops, even being an independent contraction, you were almost shamed for wanting days off, no matter the circumstances. Opening our own shop allowed us to build the freedom and flexibility for not only ourselves to take vacations, but for our child and any potential children we may have along the way. It allowed freedom of our schedules to take days off that helped us grow ourselves and our brand. I am so thankful for my clients that have pushed me for constant growth but also the continuous trust they put in me to provide them such precise services. They are definitely my family, away from home. Something i am prideful of is providing service to individuals in my community with intellectual disabilities. Sometimes some of our clients’ stories start as people who others have told not to come back, people who cannot tolerate haircuts in “typical” barbershop environments, or people who others might get overwhelmed cutting.

Can you talk to us about how you funded your business?
I saved during one of the hardest times of my life to get out of a situation in a prior barbershop I was in. Any and all extra money my wife and i made was put back. We paid cash for all of our funding, with an occasional barter for haircuts and help from our friends and family we were able to prepare our new space to make it move in ready within a month of signing the lease.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Word of mouth. Building clientele is hard sometimes, but it doesn’t always have to be. A few good clients that back you and your brand can go a long way with spreading good word of mouth about your business. Just remember bad word of mouth travels faster and farther.
