We recently connected with Sam Grant and have shared our conversation below.
Sam, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
A campaign I did the photography for just won a Shorty Award in the Humor and Comedy Video category. It was a commercial for State Farm that required someone to photograph an album cover to be used in the actual commercial so I set up before everybody else, did the photography and it immediately got sent out to be printed and used in the production.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m a photographer and director whose work is primarily split between commercial advertising, lifestyle and music. I love capturing human connection and unique experiences for both the subjects and the viewers.
I’m proud of the depth my work has, ranging between so many differences genres but all bound together by one theme: the human condition.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I’ve actually been working a lot on unlearning almost everything! After 10 years in the industry, it’s exciting for me to put myself in different situations where I’m vulnerable and end up making everything up as I go along, instead of playing it safe.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is being able to channel your emotions and put it all out into the world for other people to experience. Another giant reward is all the different people you get to meet, whether they’re subjects or co-workers, we’re all humans navigating life and bonding through art.
