We recently connected with Sam George and have shared our conversation below.
Sam, appreciate you joining us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
Much earlier, definitely.
Sam and I (Ben) are brothers, performing together from a young age. We formed Giant and the Georges with Luke and K Man around 2017/2018, by which point we’d all been through a number of job changes which, for me at least, caused such a huge sense of societal disconnect.
So, frustrated with the world of work, we set our sights high… We then very quickly readjusted our sights and accepted a load of gigs where the payment was in exposure (we once even got paid in burritos.)
Joking aside, we appreciate every opportunity that came our way (even when we were being fleeced) as it gave us the space to hone our craft and meet a few characters along the way.
I think when you are younger though, it’s easier to draw a crowd. You have college and uni friends who don’t yet have huge commitments that they have to prioritise over coming to your show.
That said, we do have very loyal fans that we can always count on to show up. There’s nothing greater than hearing the
audience singing back at you, and feeling, in that moment, a sense of mutual understanding and connection.

Sam, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Zingy hooks, tangy riffs and vocal harmonies sweeter than honey! Giant and the Georges are dynamic performers, blending shimmering indie-rock with evocative lyricism.
After being crowned ‘Artist of the Week’ of the week on BBC Introducing, Giant and the Georges have gone on to sell out venues, tour the country and have even appeared on hit BBC Three drama ‘Phoenix Rise’.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
We’re driven to create music that will intrigue and excite, whilst still maintaining our own authenticity. As cliché as it sounds, we feed off the energy of the crowd and our mission is to take them on a sonic voyage through our own blend of shimmering indie rock.
We have supreme confidence and unshakeable belief in that which we write and perform, and we are striving to take our show to Glastonbury and beyond.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
There’s an incredibly slim chance of overnight success, so you must put the work in (which to be fair, we have always done right from the get-go).
However, you must take time to appreciate what is around you and establish firm friendships with the other bands on your scene, both locally and from further afield.
There’s plenty of room at the table for everyone and it’s not about egos and competition. For us, it’s all about the sharing of inspiration, being open to personal interpretation, and ultimately using the medium of music as a vehicle for unity.
