We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sam Evans a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Sam thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I always wanted to pursue a creative path professionally but most of my life financial responsibilities have taken precedence and I’ve had to work jobs that pay the bills rather than enrich the soul.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am an artist based in Perth Western Australia. Most of my work revolves around pop culture, whether it be wrestling, gangster movies or retro video games. I generally make art that I personally would like to hang on my own walls. The majority of my audience is in the USA and I ship original paintings there all the time. I painted the cover for the Estee Nack project Nacksaw which was curated by Westside Gunn. I work mainly with acrylic paint on canvas and like to use the palette knife for extra texture.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
During the covid times I lost my job so had to rely on art for income. I painted an empty stadium and sold tickets for people to be painted into the crowd. I sold 65 tickets. The fact that anyone bought one was crazy. It was a lot of fun. I called it “mystery match mania”.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding thing is when people reach out and tell me that my art has made them feel something. Nostalgia, sadness whatever it is. I know I’ve done my job when this happens
