Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sam Bybee. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Sam, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
Haha well, the funny thing is growing up as a local Singer-songwriter in my community. You have to find a way to make a living before it becomes your living so I have basically done every kind of job there is. I mean i’ve sold cars, I’ve waited tables, heck, I even had a government job at one point. If we’re being honest, I was terrible at all those jobs. My brain just wasn’t meant for that life, I know it sounds silly, but a singer, songwriter artist entertainer is what I am meant to be, mostly because it’s all that I’m really good at lol .
Sam, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m an Acoustic/Americana musician from living in ATL by way of San Diego. A little bit about me, I have over 20 years experience playing music and endorsements from Taylor Guitars and Gigtown, I have been lucky enough to make it my full time job. I expansive experience playing multiple music and art festivals, restaurants, bars, corporate and private events and music venues so my style is as big or as small as your needs. I’ve written and recorded over 7 albums, as a solo artist and as a part of 22 Kings, one of which was produced by Alex Wong, producer of Delta Rae’s “Carry the Fire.” This tour was my 5th national tour which included stops at Oysterfest, SXSW and NAMM, among many others.
And these last two years really since Covid, I have reignited my love for recording, engineering producing and developing. Over these last two years, which has allowed me to do sound design for The Marcus Buckingham company, that went on to win over 15 in words, including a Titan Award. I have also helped record local artist, such as Kyle Phelan, in the company of wolves, and Noah Rickertsen. I even use the space to cut my latest record I Am Not Here which is set to release on all platforms July 31, 2023.
I am more than humbled to be a part of this community and consider myself lucky to have made it my job for as long as I have. It has allowed me to meet countless wonderful people across all spectrums of life and that is truly in measurable. I look forward to writing and recording throughout this upcoming year, and releasing more music. Thanks again for providing a platform for us to help get the word out. Again you can pre-order my album on iTunes January 16, and wide release on January 31, 2023. Cheers-
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
As I mentioned earlier with Covid, I had to reimagine my relationship to Music in a way that made sense going forward. As a looping artist, I’m used to coming up with full sounds on the spot, and it was a natural progression to take that idea into a studio. Building the studio, however, was something else entirely, there’s so much I had to learn to make it a workable space. Overall, it was immeasurable, but it was also quite a challenge. In the best way.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
So this is gonna sound sappy, but I guess the question kind of elicits this response so here we go. The most rewarding aspect of being an artist, or creative for me, is the ability to tell stories that matter to me. I know that I have a particular outlook on life and the way that I tell the stories are told. By the way that is why diversity matters so much when it comes to the stories that are being told. Being able to reach people is really what it’s all about for me, small connections, human to human are really the glue that holds this thing together.
