We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sam Blasko. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sam below.
Alright, Sam thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I grew up singing and knew it was something I would always want to do.
One particular day in a voice lesson, my voice coach explained to me artists’ and singers’ didn’t always write their own songs. She told me to go home and look at my CD’s to try and find the songwriter credits. I was absolutely shocked that in most cases it was entirely different people writing these albums. It was then I realized I wanted to be a songwriter.
I went to college to a science degree and potentially go to vet school. Everyone kept telling me how hard that was going to be. Engineering would be hard. Animal science would be hard. Getting into vet school would be hard. I figured if everything was going to be *hard* I may was well do what I really wanted to do. I went to a concert my sophomore or junior year of college & realized that I would never truly be fulfilled if I didn’t work in music in some capacity. The next week I changed my major to marketing. And moved to Nashville in 2019 right after graduating.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
A local country radio station played 24/7 in my bedroom all through middle school and high school, it’s been Nashville or bust ever since. I write predominately country music but growing up on Shania Twain and the Dixie Chicks just as much as Avril Lavigne and Brittany Spears, there is certainly an element of pop. I’ve been writing and working with various independent artists since moving to Nashville. I draw inspiration from country music’s timeless storytelling and try to bring a thoughtful, conversational lyric to every room I’m in.
More recently, I have had a song featured on FOX’s “Call Me Kat”, reached over 2 million streams as a songwriter, and regularly play at various Nashville venues including The Bluebird Cafe and The Listening Room.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Radio & live shows are still the top paying avenues for life music. Supporting artists by attending shows and buying merchandise is huge!
Word of mouth is also so important for up and coming artists and writers’. Although streaming is not a huge source of payment at the moment, the visibility it offers smaller, independent artist’s is super cool.
Share songs you really like with friends, try catch a local concert. All the little things add up!
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Being able to create something from nothing every day is the coolest thing. I typically sit in a room with 2-3 others writers and we get to tell our own stories, each others’ stories, and/or completely make up stories out of nothing. Being able to look back at all of the songs and stories I’ve written is incredible.
It is also so rewarding seeing how these songs I write in my friends’ living rooms can take on a life of their own. Whether it is released or just played at live shows. People hearing and reacting and relating to my songs is a very surreal experience.
