Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Salome Saavedra Rondon. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Salome thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. The first dollar your business earns is always special and we’d love to hear how your brand made its first dollar of revenue.
In 2018 I started weaving macrame, this was the technique which I decided to start Mikrama Studio. So I attended a local fair with a few things I had knitted, I didn’t sell anything that day, and when I was ready to throw in the towel and leave, my first client appeared, a foreign boy who saw in my art when I didn’t see it. He challenged me to create unique woven pieces and sculptures, that at that time didn’t cross my mind. It opened my eyes to create and explore with different materials and unite fabric with sculpture.
I am very grateful for not throwing in the towel that day.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
MIKRAMA is a textile studio under the creative direction of Salomé Saavedra, known artistically as XALO. I study international business, sculpture and various dyeing techniques with natural pigments and I`m also a proud mom.
The first time I knitted was thanks to an aunt who taught me how to crochet when I was 7 years old.
The pieces draw on various sources of inspiration and aim to preserve the ancestral weaving traditions of indigenous cultures, the appreciation of nature and the exploration of contemporary techniques such as dreamcatchers, looms, crochet, macramé, textile art, sculpture and natural dyeing.
Our textile art are ready to decorate your spaces, they are made 100% by hand with natural fibers, we customize measurements and design. With patience and skill, the threads intertwine in a dance of colors and shapes that make spaces fill with magic.
Committed to the use of natural fibers and the mission of helping the environment, reusing, revitalizing and promoting textile art in modern cities.
Its focus is divided into 3 main areas. The first is educational, where we teach how to create, adapt and reproduce weaving techniques. The second is dedicated to the creation of handmade textile pieces and the third to supply supplies to create your own textile pieces.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
The world of art is not easy, I have been told many times that I cannot make a living from art, that it is better to have a steady job, save a little and then have your own business. I once got a job and it only lasted 6 months and during that time I didn’t knit a single day. After that I realized that I can’t live without creating.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I am still creating and growing my audience on social media, my advice for those people who find it difficult to create content is: study and put it into practice, there is nothing better than learning by experimenting, and what if you make a mistake? It’s not the end of the world.
Making the decision to be consistent with what we do, makes a difference.
