We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sally Mullins. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sally below.
Hi Sally, thanks for joining us today. Have you ever had an amazing boss, mentor or leader leading you? Can you us a story or anecdote that helps illustrate why this person was such a great leader and the impact they had on you or their team?
I had a great boss called Florence Chan when I first moved to LA in the late nineties at a language school, ESL specifically, teaching English to mainly Asian adults in Monterey Park. She hired me and promoted me very fast so I felt she saw I was special and I respected her judgement. There was someone more qualified than I was and it may have been better to go with her in the long run but I felt like beyond the professional Florence just adored me. She gave me some of her old designer clothes and bought me a gorgeous ring. I worked really hard for a couple of years but then comedy took me away from her and the school but she helped me beleive in myself enough to be my own boss and after I gave up our vibrant school and how well I was paid and treated I didn’t feel compelled to try work my way up in a company again. I’ve been my own boss since for better and for worse. Florence worked me hard but she cared about me.
Sally, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I have been involved in acting since middle school drama club and community theatre. I went to FAU in Boca Raton Florida and got a BFA in theatre did so many amazing productions and partied a lot. I moved to LA and got into stand up which is something I had never meant to do but have always been a funny freak. Shortly after I quit working in the language school around 2000 I got into fetish films and built a following and ended up going into harcore adult work. I talk about this in my comedy and perform every Friday at the Comedy Store on Sunset. If you can’t make it there, definitely check out my special on Amazon called Sleazy Does It.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
About a year and a half ago I moved out fo LA cause I could not afford to buy and I had too many pets to rent. I bought a place in the West Mojave desert for under 100k and go back to LA twice a week. This has helped me have time to make more cotent and i would say that no matter what your time constraints are alays keep it simple, post a lot and something will stick. My Instagram following grew and I was able to convert it into money on my paid platforms. I really think it’s because I did not have LA rent hanging over my head and if you are trying to focus on your social media I would say get out of the struggle a bit plus to desert lighting is great and oh yeah, I got more pets.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I like to help animals or causes I believe in and that motivates me a lot. I don’t look out for myself all the time but I am a Karen for a cause and it makes me feel good that I have some extra money to send to groups helping dispalced pets in Ukraine and other causes. I have also gottan a bunch of dogs and cats in the desert fixed, treated and rehomed so the people helping people helping pets thing is a great vibe for reality TV with the desert backdrop of bikers and meth. As far as performing live comedy, I would bottom out if I didn’t get that rush so that’s part of the drive but I definitely feel since I got out of LA I am producing more content overall and have more me time.
