We recently connected with Salisha George and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Salisha , thanks for joining us today. Let’s kick things off with a hypothetical question – if it were up to you, what would you change about the school or education system to better prepare students for a more fulfilling life and career?
There are many things that I would change about the educational system. It all starts with Elementary. If you think about it, from 1st grade to 12th grade, we are trained to be at school for 8 hours, like a full time job, with an hour lunch break. We are basically taught all of our lives to be employees. Not one class teaches us about credit, entrepreneurship, saving, investing, nothing! So if I were to change anything about the educational system, I’d start right there. Then, I’d increase the pay for everyone who works in the educational system. When it boils down to cosmetology school, or trade schools as a whole, I would ensure to include services tailored to young people as well as those of color. I remember seeing people who would literally get panic attacks when they’d get a client with thick, coarse, kinky hair., so many didn’t know how to properly wash dreadlocks, and so many who strong believed that good hair didn’t include 4c hair. Going back to the question of how we can prepare students for a more fulfilling life and career, I would say the best way to do that is to teach them while they’re young. At career day, they dont need to only see police, firefighters, nurses, and doctors. They also need to see entrepreneurs and those who work in the service industry. We also need to bring more trades in grade school so students can experience what difference trades that they may fall in love with.
Salisha , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Salisha, better known as Lisha, the owner of Divine Rootz, started with her passion for the beauty industry at a very young age. At the age of 3, her cousin bought her a life size doll that her mom had her do a different style to every day. By the age of 9, she was already displaying her skills, executing retouches to her mother’s relaxers and by 15 she was doing the hair of her friends, including styles such as a sew-in. After graduating high school, Lisha knew that she wanted to do hair professionally and that she wanted to cater to all hair types, while specializing in locs. While it took a few years for her to start cosmetology school, due to several life events, she remained determined to go after her dreams. In 2018, Lisha enrolled in cosmetology school, where she excelled and completed her courses early and received her license. Once she obtained her license to work in the cosmetology field, she worked at two salons for a short period of time, however, she quickly learned that she wanted to do beauty in a different way and offer her clients a unique experience. While working in the other salons, she was pushed and motivated to give life to Divine Rootz. Divine Rootz was birthed out of passion for beauty, self love, and care, out of eagerness to help men, women, and children look and feel their best. She also started a hair care line which include an amazing edge control, Refresh hair oil, and rose water that is at a few local stores as well. Fast forward, she fell in love with educating and became a cosmetology instructor. As a Licensed Cosmetologist, Licensed Barber, and Certified Master Loctician, Lisha uses all of her skills to transform the crowns of others. In the scope of cosmetology and barbering, Lisha focuses a lot on natural hair care, repair, braided styles, smoothing treatments, hair cuts, and so much more. As a Certified Master Loctician, she focuses on instant locs, maintaining and repairing locs, and so much more. The problem that she solves for her clients is that she is a one stop shop. She is most proud of seeing her students excel in the industry.
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
Social media and Booksy! I use both regularly to communicate with my clients and promote and new services or products.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Parents are not always right. I unlearned that when after I finally finished the cosmetology and barbering program. Initially, they thought that the beauty industry wasnt as promising due to our Caribbean upbringing. Well you see, in the country we’re from, hairstylists and barbers dont make money. They don’t go far in life with it at all. Mostly lawyers, doctors, police officers, etc do well in the country we’re from. So far in the beauty industry, I’ve had many accomplishments that i don’t believe i would have had without it!
