Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sal G.. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Sal G., appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I was about 18 or so when I felt that I could take rapping serious. I was skipping class to smoke and freestyle with the homies like everyday. That led to writing in notebooks and crafting songs. It wasn’t long until I fell in love with the artform.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I go by the name “Sal G.”. I am a recording artist/business owner. I’ve had a passion for everything hip-hop/music for as long as I could remember to be honest. My family had a huge impact on my musical upbringing. Growing up, my moms would blast everything from Whitney Houston to The Beatles. My Pops would blast Salsa legends Hector Lavoe and Frankie Ruiz religiously. My sisters would bump alternative rock bands such as Nirvana, Deftones, Weezer, etc. as well as 90s hip-hop. The first album I ever owned was “Stankonia” by OutKast. My older bro bought it for me. So its always been apart of my life. In my blood, if you will. I would say I first got into the music industry when I opened up for an artist at the legendary “Velvet Lounge” venue in U st. in 2018. I’ve been writing, recording and performing songs ever since. What has set me aside from other artists so far I would say is being as genuine as possible in my music. Everything you hear is unique and true to my story. No one can be me but me. So I stay as close to that as I can. As for the fashion side of things, It’s pretty connected to the music as well. I would observe the way my favorite artists’ would dress in their music videos or on 106 & park and pay attention to the brands being worn, how they put pieces together etc. Then in the blog/mixtape era there would be mad articles and pictures on new streetwear and underground music etc. So within those adolescent years I formed my own style and developed a knack for being stylish wherever I went. Fast forward some 8 years and now I own a clothing brand with my business partner Francisco Gonzales called Rosemoney Collections.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
It would have to be having a creative outlet to express my deepest emotions, ideas and perspective on life. I would say its therapeutic to a certain degree. Writing down my fears, pleasures, mistakes, interests, etc. seems to alleviate the constant stress that life’s ups & downs causes. And in turn, I hope it helps people who are going thru their own struggles to be able to relate to and identify with someone who puts it all out there so they don’t have to.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
To live up to my fullest potential and enjoy life. at the same time. The worst thing to me is the thought of being miserable with myself because I never went for it. It being my dreams.
